Ashwagandha: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Dosage and Supplements

Ashwagandha is a herb that may help raise natural testosterone levels and regulate cortisol levels through the reduction of stress and anxiety.

Uses of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha has been studied to be effective for reducing cortisol, a stress hormone, and anxiety. For this reason, you will find it in an array or product categories. Ashwagandha is found in Nootropics, Fat Burners, Testosterone Boosters,  and Sleep Aids. It is also very common as a standalone as well.

Ashwagandha has a study showing it to be beneficial for increasing muscle mass and strength. This and the anxiety/stress reduction benefits work well in Testosterone Boosters, as they help with overall well-being. Of course, there is no real evidence for a “testosterone boost”, but strength and muscle mass falls into that category.  

In the same study, it was shown to be beneficial for fat loss as well. The subjects reported a greater increase in fat loss as well.

It is sometimes added to Sleep Aids. While there are multiple reasons, a great one is that it has been shown to be beneficial for anxiety.

The anti-anxiety benefits are usually why they are added to Nootropics. Anxiety, which is a side effect of stimulants (common in Nootropics), can hinder focus, which is one reason why you’ll find Ashwagandha added to Nootropics.

Interactions with Ashwagandha

In Nootropics, you’ll typically find Ashwagandha paired with ingredients such as Huperzine A, L-Tyrosine and Alpha-GPC.

In Sleep Aids, you’ll find it paired with ingredients such as GABA, Phenibut and Melatonin.

As for Fat Burners, you’ll commonly find it paired with ingredients such as GBB, Synephrine, Caffeine Anhydrous and Grains of Paradise.

Side Effects of Ashwagandha

Side effects of Ashwagandha include upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting. 

Recommended Ashwagandha Dosage

A typical dose of Ashwagandha is 300mg, twice daily. Although 600mg can be taken at once.
