Overview of Sparta Nutrition Kraken
Sparta Nutrition can be considered more of a “hardcore” supplement brand aimed at those who are more hardcore in their training. The brand produces highly effective and intense products like the one we are reviewing today: Kraken. They also produce muscle builders, fat burners and cycle support.
Kraken is a high stim pre-workout that is one of very best pre-workout supplements ever created. Seriously, it’s that good. Typically with pre-workouts that are very solid like this you get a proprietary blend, not with Kraken. Kraken is confident enough to release a fully transparent label to go along with it’s highly effective supplement. Kraken by Sparta Nutrition is a must-have for stimulant lovers. Kraken is definitely one of the best pre-workouts we’ve ever had.
Testing Results and Ratings
We reviewed Sparta Nutrition Kraken on five categories. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the pre-workout, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.
We then look at effectiveness. An effective pre-workout will use high quality, proven ingredients, at clinically backed dosages. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.
Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Watermelon Rancher and Rainbow Candy.
Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.
Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Another part of value are the competitors and other versions of pre-workout products on the market.
Kraken utilizes a fully transparent label, which makes it awesome to breakdown for all of you. As we mentioned earlier, many products that are highly effective choose to hide a lot, especially when they use DMHA or DMAA.
Kraken gives you the option for one or two scoops. A one scoop serving, which may be sufficient for many lifters, yields 40 servings. A double scoop, what we took, yields 20 servings. For the purpose of the profile breakdown we are going to look at the two scoop fact panel.
Kraken starts with 4mg of L-Cittruline. This has been shown to help with pumps. Per Examine.com, L-Cittruline taken at 6-8g one hour prior to exercise is best. Kraken gives you 4g. This doesn’t mean it is under dosed. We have seen others with clinical studies backing 4g, but we would prefer the full 6g. However, you do still get the increase in NO levels.
Then Kraken gives us the clinically backed 3.2g of Beta Alanine which has been shown to increase muscle endurance. Then we’re given 2g of HydroMax (Glycerol Powder) which aids in hydration. We get 1g of Taurine and Agmatine Sulfate. Taurine aids in performance and Agmatine Sulfate helps with NO production, aiding in your pump. Along with Taurine you’re getting another 500mg of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine. All four of these are dosed appropriately for a pre-workout.
Kraken contains 250mg of Eria Jarensis Extract, 200mg of Caffeine and 200mg of DMHA. This is the trifecta of energy in a pre-workout. Caffeine can be lower because DMHA is higher. We typically see DMHA around 150mg so at 200mg this is one of the higher dosed pre-workouts. There is no ideal dosage of Eria Jarensis (similar effects of DMAA but not as strong) but we’ve seen other supplements have 125mg to 250mg, so it is safe to assume this is dosed correctly.
I mentioned earlier the pump. We all love the pump. We are also getting 100mg of L-Norvaline which essentially tells your body not to limit your pump allowing you to achieve a longer lasting pump, something we all love!
I love to take my pre-workouts on an empty stomach at 5am, right after I wake up. I am in the gym by 5:40am. Approximately 10 minutes after taking this you can feel it kick in. In fact, my ears got red and tingly from Kraken. You can say, “that’s must be the Beta Alanine,” and you’re probably right to some extent, but I am a stim guy. I love stims. I have had other pre-workout supplements that were dosed at 3mg of Beta Alanine and I did not get this effect. The pump was great. As I mentioned earlier, I would have liked 6mg of L-Cittruline but with the L-Norvaline the pump provided is fantastic. The energy is out-of-this-world. The trifecta of stims worked VERY well for me. The focus is solid as well. I liked the use of nootropics in other pre-workouts, and might have been nice here, but the cognitive enhancement of Kraken was solid. This is one of the most effective pre-workouts I have ever taken.
I am not a huge fan of watermelon flavored supplements. However, when I grade the taste I look at what taste they are claiming and how close it comes to that. This tastes just like a watermelon jolly rancher. It is very refreshing in the morning. It does not taste like chemicals or have any weird after taste.
Kraken mixed a lot better than most pre-workouts I have taken. A couple shakes of the shaker cup, whether it was a Blender Bottle or a Cyclone Cup, it dissolved very well.
The $40 price tag is typical of pre-workout supplements today. Kraken retails for $40. You get 40 servings with one scoop and 20 servings with two scoops. For me, I was a two scoop guy. That would be $2/serving for a pre-workout, which is a bit on the higher end, but due to the effectiveness of this product the price is justified. I have absolutely no issues paying a $40 price tag for a highly effective product, and you shouldn’t either.
