Core Nutritionals has reformulated their popular sleep aid supplement and replaced their Knockout Punch flavor with an improved Cherry Bomb flavor.
The reformulation will include the use of two additional ingredients and some minor adjustments to dosages of existing ingredients. The reformulation also keeps Phenibut, an ingredient that has come under fire lately from the FDA, in the formula. Let's take a look at the old label versus the new label.
The biggest different you will notice will be Core Nutritonals has added L-Theanine and Melatonin to the label. In fact, the serving size has increased from 13.8g to 14.3g.
The reformulated version of Core ZZZ will still feature 3g of GABA.
Research has shown that GABA aids in quality sleep by reducing stress and anxiet. Not only does GABA aid with quality sleep,
studies show it does improve the secretion of growth hormone which can lead to muscle recovery while you sleep. The standard dosage of GABA should be between 3g-5g if used for muscle growth and recovery.
L-Glycine is still used at 3,000mg. Glycine has been shown in
studies to aid in quality sleep. Glycine has also been used in many muscle recovery products as it acts as an anti-inflammatory and aids in muscle recovery. Standard dosages of Glycine are 3,000mg.
L-Trytophan stays at 1,000mg. Trytophan is the chemical released from the body after a big Thanksgiving dinner that makes you tired. Trytophan supports quality sleep. Tryptophan is converted to Niacin in the body, which promotes serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s associated with sleep. This is a massive dosage of Tryptophan.
Core Nutritionals has decided to move forward with continuing to use Phenibut, even after several brands received warning letters for using the ingredient. The dosage of Phenibut is 1,000mg. Phenibut supports a deep REM sleep cycle. Most effective and safe dosages of Phenibut are 750mg-1,000mg.
L-Ornithine is still used at 400mg. Ornithine plays a central role in the urea cycle, functioning along with Arginine and Citrulline to rid the body of ammonia, which can cause muscle fatigue and soreness. Ornithine can help with muscle recovery. Ornithine is also connected to better sleep. In a
study, they found that supplementing with Ornithine reduced cortisol levels from reduction in stress and anxiety which lead to better sleep. In this study, participants took 400mg of Ornithine or a placebo. Ornithine can be taken daily up to 6g, but the previous study mentioned verifies 400mg is sufficient for sleep quality.
Mucana Pruriens is still used as well, but the dosage was reduced fro 500mg to 250mg. Mucana Pruriens has been shown to increase L-DOPA levels. Increase in L-DOPA results in mood elevation. Typical dosages of Mucana Pruriens are 200mg-500mg per day. You can go as high as 1g.
A new ingredient used is L-Theanine at 200mg. L-Theanine has anti-stress effects and can reduce anxiety. This is a relaxtion ingredient. We typically see it at 100mg.
Lastly, another new ingredient is the popular Melatonin at 5mg. Melatonin is used in a lot of sleep aids from 1mg-5mg. We recommend the 5mg dosage.
Fitness Informant's POV
The reformulated ZZZ is still very good. In fact, many may like this formula better with the addition of L-Theanine and Melatonin. I personally love sleep aids. I also love Phenibut. I think there is a risk here with Core keeping it in the formula, but until the FDA tells them no, keep on keeping on! I would suggest you stock up on this just in case.
The flavor, Cherry Bomb, I am told is an improvement from the Knockout Punch. I have not tried either but I am looking forward to checking this one out.
