LionEdge Nutrition Pre Edge

Doctor formulated LionEdge Nutrition has finally got into the pre-workout game with the launch of Pre Edge. Pre Edge is the company's first stim-based pre-workout product. Pre Edge has officially launched in Lion's Blood Flavor.

LionEdge Nutrition’s Pre Edge is manufactured by All American Pharmaceuticals. This is the manufacture behind the brand EFX, as well as others. You will see Dr. Jeff Golini’s influence on many LionEdge Nutrition’s products, including Pre Edge with the addition of Kre-Alkalyn.

We’ve discussed the formula before here at FI but we will take another dive into it.

LionEdge Nutrition Pre Edge SFPThe formula starts with the Lion Vasodilator Pump Matrix. This features, per 2-scoops, 6g L-Citrulline. Citrulline is the precursor to Arginine in the body. Arginine inside your body will increase Nitric Oxide. Arginine AKG is dosed at 1g. This is an old school ingredient still used in pre-workouts and pump powders, however you need a higher amount of Arginine to be absorbed into the blood stream for an impact. A 1g dosage may not be enough to impact blood flow. Lastly, they give us 1g Taurine which can aid in electrolyte regulation.

The Lion Strength & Performance Matrix starts with 2g of Betaine. Betaine can aid in power output and strength. It also has benefits in muscle recovery. We typically see this at 1.5-2.5g. Beta-Alanine is dosed at 1.6g. This is 50% of what we would like to see for a daily intake of Beta-Alanine. Beta-Alanine can aid with lactic acid buffering and muscular endurance. The final ingredient in this matrix is Kre-Alkalyn at 1.5g. Kre-Alkalyn is Creatine Monohydrate, however they claim it has the same impact at a lower dosage than a typical 5g dosage of Creatine Monohydrate. This is dosed at 1.5g.

Then the formula turns it’s attention to energy and focus with the Lion Energy & Focus Matrix. This starts with 1.5g L-Tyrosine. This is a great dosage of a nootropic ingredient that can improve the mind-muscle connection. Caffeine is dosed at 300mg. This is the energy catalyst in this formula. Choline Bitartrate is then dosed at 41mg. This is a cognitive improving ingredient. We typically see this dosed much higher than 41mg. We should see this at a minimum of 500mg. Lastly we get 50mcg of Huperzine A. This is another nootropic ingredient that can aid in focus. We would like to see this at a minimum of 50mcg, but prefer a dosage of 100mcg or higher, especially when there is no Alpha-GPC.

The brand tosses in an Anti-Crash Matrix that starts with a massive dosage of Theanine at 350mg. This can counter the “jitters” and “anxiety” that stims can give you. However the issue here is that this is not loaded with stims. We get 300mg Caffeine, which in the pre-workout world isn’t a massive amount to need a dosage of 350mg Theanine. They also give us 75mg of Theobromine. This can aid in prolonging energy and increasing blood flow.

LionEdge Nutrition puts a hydration matrix in this pre-workout as well that includes Coconut Water Powder at 500mg, Magnesium Oxide at 200mg and Pink Himalayan Salt at 100mg. The formula rounds out with 5mg of BioPerine for absorption.

Although this is not a formal review, we can see highs and lows in this formula based on dosing and ingredient selection.

The flavor of Lion’s Blood is their take on Tiger’s Blood. The brand had sent us other flavors as well, but this was the one that got a passing grade from us.

We did get a chance to use the pre-workout (view our Quick Hit video above). It wasn’t bad. Even with the hefty dosage of Theanine you still get something from this. If you like that stimulant feeling then this won’t be for you. The pre-workout itself was about average. We’d like to see Arginine dismissed, a lower dosage of Theanine, for starters, and an increase dedication to cognitive ingredients outside of Tyrosine. We like the dosage of Caffeine, Tyrosine, Betaine, Taurine and Citrulline.

If you are looking for a banned substance free pre-workout, that isn’t going to put you over the edge in terms of a stimulant feel, then this will be a solid choice for you based on the supplement facts panel and our initial use of Pre Edge.

Final Takeaway

I summed up my thoughts above for this one. For someone as experienced with pre-workouts as I am I would like to see more innovation in this formula. There are a lot of awesome new ingredients on the market. Some of the ingredients could be removed or improved on (dosage, source, etc) to be more in my wheelhouse, however if you're new to the pre-workout game or looking for something that is banned substance free, this could be a good choice for you.
