N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)/Glutathione

NAC is a precursor to Glutathione and is known as a powerful antioxidant and is commonly used as a liver health supplement.

Uses of N-Acetyl Cysteine

NAC is a very popular supplement on the market today, at least for the market of people who focus on health. On the sports nutrition side of the industry however, it loses a bit of its notoriety as we tend to focus more on the products with immediate effects such as pre-workouts, fat burners, and pump products.

N-Acetyl Cysteine is a precursor to Glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant in the body, and is very important for overall health. According to researchers, Glutathione may contribute to longevity. It has also been shown to help with metal detoxification in the body.

As for liver health, NAC is commonly used for as a counterpoison to acetaminophen in the cases of overdoses. Overall, it has a wealth of studies showing it to be beneficial for health purposes. There is a good reason as to why many lifters on oral steroids (the hepatotoxic ones) supplement with NAC.

While most supplement with NAC for the liver health benefits, it has also been shown to be potentially beneficial for the purpose of treating withdrawal symptoms stemming from cocaine addiction. A study showed a NAC to be effective at preventing relapse in cocaine users. Another study showed that NAC has potential to curb marijuana cravings in younger people with marijuana dependence.

Side Effects with N-Acetyl Cysteine

Some side effects from NAC consumption include nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. Always talk to your doctor before supplementing with NAC.

Recommended Dose of N-Acetyl Cysteine

NAC can should be dosed anywhere from 200mg-2400mg per day. We recommend starting on the lower side and working your way up depending on your goal 2400mg was used in the study for Nicotine dependence.
