The Outright Bar continues to trend forward and upward with a plethora of new flavors, and now incorporating game changing ingredients to make the bar work harder for you. Outright Bar is currently ranked #1 in our Best Protein Bars on the market. We gave the nod to Outright Bar due to the flavor, texture, consistency, value and overall ingredients used. Outright Bar was the first bar to popularize using a peanut butter base infused with protein (MTS Nutrition) to create a protein bar designed for the entire family. Now, with the addition of Nutrition 21’s Velositol, it just put Outright Bar into a category of functional foods.
Who Makes the Outright Bar?
The Outright Bar was created by Marc Lobliner. Marc Lobliner has a track record of being involved in ground-breaking businesses. Marc was at the helm of SciVation, which popularized BCAAs and the 2:1:1 ratio we have known to come and love today. After selling SciVation Marc launched MTS Nutrition. MTS Nutrition grew quickly behind Marc’s drive and YouTube success. MTS Nutrition is the protein used in Outright Bar today.
On top of MTS Nutrition, Marc also is an owner in Ambrosia Collective, a line of premium supplements designed at overall health and wellness. Marc is also the Chief Marketing Officer at TigerFitness.com.
Under Marc’s control (and his wife Katie) Outright Bar has grown to be the #1 choice by many seeking a protein bar. It quickly became the #1 selling bar at Vitamin Shoppe as well as countless other retailers.
What Makes Outright Bar Different?
The Outright Bar was brought to market with nothing quite like it. There were several reasons the Outright Bar was different. This whole food bar took the industry by storm.
Whole Foods Base
The biggest change on the market was Outright Bar utilized a whole foods base. One of the most calorie dense foods, peanut and almond butter, were used for most of the Outright Bar. Since the inception of the brand they have launched a nut-free option using sunflower seeds.
The whole food base of peanut or almond butter gave Outright Bar a different texture than the other bars on the market. We’ve all had bars that were hard, chewy and/or chalky. You did not get that with Outright Bar. The Outright Bar is essentially made with peanut butter, honey, protein powder and inclusions (in the case of the breakfast bar white chocolate chips). This combination of ingredients made the bar soft, moist and delicious.
Parenthetical Labeling
Parenthetical labeling can be complicated for many, but it’s the correct thing to do for the FDA and for the consumer. Parenthetical labeling means that the Outright Bar breaks out EVERY ingredient used in the bar. For example, if they use chocolate chips they actually break out what makes up chocolate chips (i.e. milk, cocoa, sugar, etc). What you will find on the nutrition label is the main ingredient bolded, followed by what makes up that ingredient. This is full transparency at its best when it comes to food.
All-Family
This is where Outright Bar really excelled. Instead of going hard-in on bodybuilding and fitness, the team at Outright Bar made this for all-family. Their marketing surrounds soccer moms and dads and kids. This is clutch when trying to build a brand that is all inclusive, which they have done successfully.
You can find Outright Bars at fitness stores, but you can also find them at C-Stores like BP and Holiday gas stations as well as grocery stores like Hy-Vee.
Outright Breakfast Bar: Mochaccino White Chocolate
All this brings us to the newest flavor of Outright Bar, which they are dubbing as a breakfast bar, in Mochaccino White Chocolate. Let us clarify that this is not just a bar for breakfast. You can have this anytime of the day. Outright Bar did a great job on this bar in terms of texture, flavor and nutrition. Let’s not forget about the X-Factor in Velositol from Nutrition 21.
Texture
Like the other Outright Bars, the new Mochaccino White Chocolate “breakfast bar” is a texture heaven for those who like bars that are soft, easy to chew and love the random crunch of an inclusions. This is a peanut butter base bar that is infused with white chocolate chips to give you several different textures that you can love.
The white chocolate chips are not “hard” meaning you won’t bust your teeth. They almost melt when you bite into them.
The moisture level of the bars are tremendous. Outright Bar does use honey, which will increase sugar but honey is so good for you, which helps keep the bar soft. Not only does it help keep the bar soft, it adds to the overall flavor profile and experience for the consumer.
Taste
As you can imagine from the name of the bar, you do get a hint of coffee with every bite. If you’re looking for a strong coffee flavor you won’t get this here, which we think is a good thing. We enjoyed the slight hint of coffee with every bite with the mix of white chocolate. These two flavor profiles work very nice together with the peanut butter base.
We would have Mochaccino White Chocolate in our top 5 Outright Bar flavors in terms of taste.
Nutrition
The Outright Breakfast Bar contains 15g of protein per every bar. This is the primary reason people purchase protein bars, for the protein. We will get to more of this later, but the combination of 15g protein with the addition of 2g Velositol makes that protein work so much harder for you.
The other macros include 14g fat and 25g carbs. Before you let this scare you (listen, not every protein bar is going to use sugar alcohols like Quest to keep net carbs below 5) you need to understand the ingredients. The first two ingredients are peanut butter (fats) and honey (carbohydrates). These are two natural ingredients that makes up the base of the bar and contributes to the macros. After honey you get whey protein isolate which is going to contribute to the 15g protein.
The addition of whey protein isolate makes this a complete amino acid profile which means it is a complete protein. For example, 6g protein from peanut butter is not a complete protein (hence why vegans need a mix of seeds and nuts to get a full amino acid profile), but when you add WPI you can make that a complete protein source, which is what you get with Outright Bar.
The X-Factor ingredient used in the new breakfast bar is the 2g of Velositol from Nutrition 21. The Outright Bar is the first functional food item that we’ve seen to utilize Nutrition 21’s Velositol.
Nutrition 21 Velositol
The addition of Velositol from Nutrition 21 is what really puts this new Outright Bar into a tier of its own. Up until now, Velositol had only been used in protein powders and amino acid products. This is the first food product we’ve seen to use the clinical dosage of Velositol at 2g.
We’ve broken down Velositol in-depth citing studies and more here at FI before, but it is important to hit on the high level benefits of the ingredient.
In Lehman’s terms, adding Velositol will double the impact of protein on muscle protein synthesis. Muscle protein synthesis is a naturally occurring process in which protein is produced to repair muscle damage caused by intense exercise. When added to protein, Velositol’s novel combination of specialized, highly soluble, non-GMO amylopectin, and patented chromium rapidly stimulates insulin release and increases muscle cell sensitivity to insulin. This safely increases insulin levels to enhance amino acid uptake, stimulate and boost MPS.
Satiation is a large part of why we buy protein bars, but if we can get the protein to work harder for us, why wouldn’t we? Multiple studies has shown Velositol to be extremely beneficial to increasing MPS over protein alone. On top of that, it does not change blood glucose levels but did increase insulin which aided in amino acid uptake.
Final Takeaway
It is so cool to see the lines of sports nutrition being crossed into major food. Seeing Nutrition 21’s Velositol being used in the most popular protein bar in many stores is a huge step in the right direction for beyond function foods. We have a feeling that this breakfast bar from Outright Bar will be the first of many new Outright Bars to use this noble ingredient from Nutrition 21.
In addition of having science backed ingredients in the new Outright Bar, it is also delicious, nutritious and affordable. It does rank in our top 5 of Outright Bars contributing to the overall success and growth of what we deem to be the #1 bar on the market today.
