Grenade is a brand that does big business overseas, but is still realatively quiet in the United States of America. In fact, Grenade owns approximately 47% marketshare on their protein bar alone in the United Kingdom. In the states the competitive set is fierce with the likes of Quest Bar, ONE Bars, Outright Bars, MRE Bars and so many more. Grenade is looking to make a move, and by launching flavors that are unique and delicious can be a move that pays off big time.
Grenade Carb Killa Dark Chocolate Raspberry
The newest bar to come to America from Grenade is in their Carb Killa line called Dark Chocolate Raspberry. In mainstream protein bars there are several raspberry flavored bars. In fact, Quest has one, but if you've ever tried it you may not be able to finish it. Grenade did something special with their Dark Chocolate Raspberry Carb Killa Bar.
The most important elements of any protein bar, in no particular order, are taste, texture and macros. We are going to dive into each of these separately for you.
Grenade Carb Killa Dark Chocolate Raspberry Taste
There are two main flavor cues in the product name alone. First we get "Dark Chocolate." Dark Chocolate does have a different taste than milk chocolate or even semi-sweet chocolate. It is also perceived as "better for you." Dark chocolate is usually very rich in chocolate flavor. Grenade did a fantastic job with this. The dark chocolate is delicious. There's no bitter off-taste you get with some dark chocolates. It compliments the bar and the raspberry tones very well.
The highlight of the bar is the raspberry flavor. Quite honestly, it is one of the best raspberry flavors we've ever tried, not even just in a bar. Someone close to Fitness Informant compared it to the Dove Dark Chocolate Candy Bar Raspberry Rose and the Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Filling Squares, two high-end chocolates in America. The raspberry flavor mixed with the dark chocolate is just a wonderful experience that you would never imagine you are eating a protein bar. You legitimately feel like you're eating a dessert or a candy bar, not something that screams health and fitness.
The richness of the dark chocolate and the raspberry make this a very enjoyable, one-of-a-kind experience. We have not had another bar like this in the protein bar game. The closest thing to it would have been a candy bar, which this is not.
Grenade's Dark Chocolate Raspberry Protein Bar tasted so good we made a protein cheesecake. Delicious was an understatement.
Grenade Carb Killa Dark Chocolate Raspberry Texture
One of our favorite features of the Grenade Carb Killa Dark Chocolate Raspberry bar is the texture. We've had other Carb Kill bars, but none have a texture like these. Many of the protein bars on the market today have on texture: chewy, soft, crunchy, hard, chalky. Grenade's Dark Chocolate Raspberry Carb Killa bar has multiple textures.
The bar itself is coated in dark chocolate. However, on the top layer, underneath the coating is a chocolate chip texture that starts the experience visually, but also via mouth feel. This part ads a slight "crunch" of sorts, is the best way we can explain it.
When you bite through the top layer you get, in our opinion, to the most enjoyable layer; the raspberry "cream" layer. This layer is soft but it is also packed with flavor. This layer is so soft you can squeeze the bar and it oozes out. It's like the cream center to chocolate covered cherries, without the cherry. As soon as you bite into this layer it is a blast of flavor.
The final texture piece comes from the main "nugget" portion of the bar. This part is soft, not chalky. It is a little chewy to make you take your time while eating it (which is good so you can enjoy the flavors) but it's not the chewy/chalkiness you get from something like a Powerbar.
With the three tiered approach to texture, Grenade absolutely did something special here.
Grenade Carb Killa Dark Chocolate Raspberry Macros
This bar tastes great and has great texture, so it must be bad for you, right? The answer is absolutely not. The macros on Grenade’s Carb Killa Bars are similar to the competitive set of protein bars in America.
The first ingredient used in the bar is a protein blend. The protein blend contains Calcium Caseinate, Whey Protein Isolate and Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Concentrate. The protein sources behind the 20g protein per bar are good with the addition of two fast digesting proteins in whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey protein.
The bar does contain sugar alcohols. If you are one of those people who has issues with sugar alcohols then this bar would not be for you, but for the vast majority of us this bar is one we can eat without any discomfort or guilt.
Each bar contains the following macros:
Calories: 220
Fats: 10g
Carbs: 21g
Protein: 20g
The gold standard in protein bars is to hit that mark of 20g protein per bar. Grenade did that while making a bar that tastes absolutely phenomenal.
Final Takeaway
Grenade is doing a good job of breaking in to the US market. If they continue to bring bars here that taste like the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Bar they have a winning formula. This bar has been available in the US market for a bit, but it was a soft launch. We're telling you that if you can find it at a local supplement store to buy it.
