Epicatechin
This ingredient is a flavanol that is found in certain foods such as dark chocolate and green tea. You will often times see it labeled as a Myostatin inhibitor, meaning it blocks the production of myostatin.
Myostatin is a protein that acts to inhibit muscle cell growth and regeneration, which is exactly why we would want to keep this at a minimum in our body. Epicatechins is thought to have an inhibiting effect on the amount of myostatin that is produced in our bodies.
One study from 2014, showed Epicatechin’s ability to limit Myostatin, while also increasing Follistatin. Follistatin is the antagonist protein to Myostatin. This study also demonstrated a slight increase in hand grip strength.
It is recommended that Epicatechin be dosed between 100-300mg per day. We are getting 300mg here, so we are on the higher end.
Arachidonic Acid
This ingredient is an omega-6 fatty acid that is synthesized in the body and consumed in your diet through things like eggs and meat. Arachidonic Acid (aka ARA) is used in the body to promote and resolve inflammation following trauma, like the muscular trauma that occurs after lifting weights.
Inflammation following exercise, in most cases, is a good thing for hypertrophy. That is how you grow, so when you take anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil or Aspirin, you are just blunting muscle protein synthesis and preventing your body from recovering and growing.
Many of the studies using ARA, use pretty high dosages of the ingredient. Many of the studies are upwards of 3,000mg of ARA. We are getting 300mg here, which is very far from the doses used in the clinical trials.
Effectiveness
Products of this nature are very hard to judge their effectiveness from the use of only one unit of product (30 days). Natural muscle builders are by no means going to provide you with the same level of results as anabolic steroids. You have to be realistic with the purchase of an over the counter muscle builder.
During our use with this product, we did notice a “pumped up” feeling and look from the Epicatechin. There was a noticeable difference after using this product for several days, as I could tell that I looked harder and more pumped during the workout. It is pretty common to feel an increase in soreness following exercise with products containing good doses of ARA. We did in fact feel a little sorer the following 48 hours than we typically do.
With that being said, the ingredients used in this formula are not bad. Each has a true purpose for being included in the formula and have clinical trials to support their use. Epicatechin could possibly lower Myostatin, leading to more muscle growth. ARA will help build muscle through the inflammation process at the cellular level. This product can be very beneficial to someone who wants an all-natural muscle builder to give them the extra edge.
Value
Epik A.T. retails for about $60 for a 30 day supply. This product is giving you just 2 ingredients that have some clinical evidence for their use as muscle builders. In our opinion, this is a solid price point. Muscle builders generally are more expensive products that can often times run upwards of $80 for a high-quality product that has multiple ingredients. It is ultimately up to the consumer whether or not the benefits of a natural muscle builder such as this one, are worth the price.
