Berberine is an alkaloid found in various plants. It is known to aid in healthy blood sugar levels.

Uses of Berberine

Berberine is commonly found in an underrated category of supplements called Glucose Disposal Agents, or “GDA” for short. To make Glucose Disposal Agents simple, they may be helpful in lowering blood sugar levels, by helping to transport glucose from the bloodstream into muscle cells, where they are stored as glycogen. Glycogen is used as energy, and is stored in muscle cells as well as the liver. It is important for anaerobic exercises.

Berberine has been shown to be especially beneficial for people with Type 2 Diabetes, and there are plentiful studies to back this up. It was also shown to be beneficial for lowering cholesterol levels.

Berberine has been studied to increase glucose disposal rates, as well (although not significant) as decreasing fasting insulin levels.

Interactions with Berberine

You’ll mostly find Berberine in Glucose Disposal Agents. It always seems to be the front and center of GDAs. It is commonly paired with ingredients such as Cinnamon, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Gymnema Sylvestre and Bitter Melon. 

Side Effects of Berberine

Low blood sugar, digestive issues, flatulence, and constipation. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking Berberine supplements.

Recommended Berberine Dosage

The clinical dose of Berberine is 1,500mg, split up into 3 separate doses throughout the day. Many choose to take their dose before or with meals.
