Olive Leaf Extract: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Dosage and Supplements

Olive Leaf Extract (Oleuropein)

Olive Leaf Extract is commonly found in general health, fat burning, and pre-workouts supplements. The active ingredient in Olive Leaf is called Oleuropein, which is believed to be the active component of Olive Leaf.

Uses of Olive Leaf Extract

Olive Leaf Extract is one of those ingredients that does not get enough attention in the sports nutrition industry. While it is most commonly used for general health, it also makes appearances in fat burning and pre-workout supplements.

According to a study, Olive Leaf Extract was compared to the blood pressure medication Captopril. The study was done on subjects with stage 1 hypertension. Olive Leaf Extract was dosed at 500mg, twice a day in one group, while the other group received 12.5mg of Captopril daily. After 8 weeks, Olive Leaf Extract was shown to be as effective as Captopril at lowering blood pressure, and unlike Captopril, was shown to reduce triglyceride levels. 

LDL Oxidation also seems to be a benefit associated with Olive Leaf. A study done on healthy males showed that the phenolic content of Olive Oil was associated with LDL oxidation modulation. This was done with low, moderate, and high doses of phenolic content.

In another study, Olive Leaf Extract was shown to improve insulin sensitivity in overweight, middle-aged men. The study was a double-blind and placebo controlled. Subjects using Olive Leaf Extract (50mg of Oleuropein), showed a 15% improvement in insulin sensitivity compared to the placebo group.    

As for fat loss, there is little evidence of its effectiveness for this purpose, however it may be beneficial for people with hyperthyroid issues, according to a study.

Interactions with Olive Leaf Extract

While supplementing with Olive Leaf Extract is the most common method of supplementation, you can also find it in pre-workouts and cardiovascular health supplements.

In pre-workouts, you’ll find it paired with Agmatine Sulfate, L-Citrulline, and Beta-Alanine.

In cardiovascular health products you’ll find it paired with ingredients such as Citrus Bergamot, Fish Oil, and Grape Seed Extract

Side Effects with Olive Leaf Extract

Possible side effects associated with Olive Leaf Extract include upset stomach, low blood pressure, headache, low blood sugar, and nausea. Always consult your doctor before supplementing with Olive Leaf Extract.

Recommended Dose of Olive Leaf Extract

For the purpose of reducing blood pressure, 500mg twice per day was shown to be effective at reducing blood pressure.

As for the purpose of insulin sensitivity, around 50mg seems to be beneficial. Lower doses may also be beneficial for LDL oxidation as well.
