BEAM Vegan Protein: A Plant Protein That Doesn’t Follow The Rules

By March 3, 2020April 8th, 2020No Comments

BEAM is a new brand that is sure to make some noise. They have a great staff behind them with more than 30 years of experience in the supplement industry, a superb flavor system, and formulas that deliver.

Today, we are going to take a look at their Vegan Protein, which of course, is for people who want a plant based protein as opposed to Whey or Egg Protein. Now, usually plant sources of protein get criticized for multiple reasons, whether that be the bioavailability, extra carbohydrates, gritty texture, being non-complete protein sources. Well, BEAM has found a way to get past that and come out with a plant based protein that isn’t the norm. Let’s take a dive into what is in Vegan Protein, and why it is one of the better plant based protein powders on the market.

BEAM Vegan Protein Sources of Protein

beam vegan proteinTo start this off, let’s take a look at the protein sources. Vegan protein sources are usually never complete, meaning they do not contain all essential aminos acids in adequate amounts, while incomplete proteins do not. Therefore, you will usually see plant based proteins contain blends of multiple sources of protein to make up a complete protein. For example, rice and beans on their own are not complete sources of protein, however when paired, they are complete proteins.

Vegan Protein contains a variety of sources. The first one, is a common plant source known as Pea Protein. This is probably the most used source of plant protein, and is certainly a good choice.

Following this are multiple protein sources from Smooth Protein™. These are sources of protein that have come from different sources, such as Mung Bean (the second protein in Vegan Protein), and Pumpkin Seed Protein (the third protein source in Vegan Protein).

All of these sources together make this protein a complete protein, and with the use of Smooth Protein™, it gives the protein a great mouthfeel and does not ruin the taste.

BEAM Vegan Protein with Hydration

One thing that really makes this protein stand out is the inclusion of Aquamin™. Aquamin is a red algae that contains minerals/electrolytes. This inclusions is awesome, as it may aid in hydration, something very important for lifters who regularly sweat during workouts.

BEAM Vegan Protein Macros

The macros in Vegan Protein are probably the best we’ve seen from any plant based protein. Usually plant proteins are higher in carbohydrates, however BEAM seemed to have skipped this rule. One scoop of Vegan Protein gives you:

Fat: 0.5g
Carbohydrates: 3g
Protein: 20g

This is comparable to most whey proteins on the market, and when you compare it to other plant proteins, the carbs are less than half. While we’re not saying that 6g-7g of carbs will hurt you any, but it is nice to see a plant protein break the norm.

Final Takeaway

Ryan: This is, hands down, one of the best tasting proteins I have ever had. Not just vegan proteins, but proteins in general. They were able to nail the blueberry flavor in a vegan protein without that weird “dirt” aftertaste. I have been becoming a fan more and more of vegan proteins with this one being one of my all-time favorites. They use quality protein sources to give us a complete amino acid profile for complete protein. To boot, they put in Aquamin to aid in hydration. Well-done by the team at BEAM.

Gerhard: While I have not tried the protein yet, I do like how it shows that you don’t have to play by specific rules when it comes to plant protein. With the lower carb content and Smooth Protein™, it shouldn’t be as gritty as other protein powders on the market, and with the flavoring system BEAM has, it should be a hit no matter what flavor you go with. The Aquamin™ is also great to see.
