We then look at effectiveness. A high quality protein will be effective. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.
Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the Salted Caramel Peanut Butter Cup, Vanilla Ice Cream Cookie and Chocolate Lava Cake flavors.
Mixability refers to how well the protein powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.
Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Another area we like is the inclusion of the Essential Fatty Acids in the form of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). Essential Fatty Acids are “essential” to your health, hence the name. You don’t see this often in protein sources so I am a big. However, if we re-visit my previous point, NutraKey fails to disclose how much of the EFAs you’re getting. It’s listed after Sucralose on the ingredients which isn’t necessarily a good thing.
The same can be said about the Digestive Enzyme Complex. In theory this is great, but without disclosing the amounts and it being listed last it doesn’t give me huge faith that there are ample amounts in Whey Optima.
Overall, the profile is good in theory. The watch comes with a big face. In this instance I had the 50mm. The band is actually made of rubber. This reminds me of some of the old school watches I wore when I was a child. You see more of the snap-type watches now (see Fossil watches), however, for this purpose I like the adjustability of the band. I have to tighten mine down to the second to last hole to fit my wrist. The band on the Commando is camouflaged.
The bold face watch head comes with a camouflaged background, an hour hand, a second hand and three dials which tell you different things. One is the time in digital format (normal or military). The other tells you the seconds or stopwatch. You also get your weekday as well among other things.
The only “negative” thing with the design is the side button cage sticks out a bit so it does rub on your wrist a bit creating the skin to harden. After it does you’re fine. If you have bigger wrists then you might not have this issue.
Overall the design of these watches are great. I had wanted to wear this watch for sometime before I wrote this review. SWOLE O’clock says they make the Commando with Sapphire Crystal Glass and it is scratch resistant. I was curious to see if this was the case, albeit I was not going to take a drill to it like they do in their videos. After wearing it for several months, both in and out of the gym, I still do not have one scratch on the glass. That’s amazing.
Another area I was concerned about was the rubber band. The watches of old had cheap rubber bands. This one is constructed with a thick band, very rugged and hardcore. It would take quite a bit to rip it. It also has two metal bands on both sides of the face to provide not only fashion but durability.
The SWOLE O’clock Commando is water resistant up to 50m. I took it swimming and there was no issues.
The face is strong, rugged. It is 5.7cm wide with the buttons. It weighs just under 7oz. This thing is tough.
I have had many other watches before from Fossil. Fossil watches cost the same, if not more and are not near the quality of the SWOLE O’clock watch.
The SWOLE O’clock Commando Watch is extremely fashionable. It is camouflaged. How can it not go with everything? In all honesty this is my favorite watch to wear with any outfit. It is a talking piece to everyone you meet. You look badass wearing it. Honestly, you feel much stronger with it on your wrist.
I have worn my Commando watch everywhere. To the gym. To the mall. To work (suite and tie job). I even wore it as the best man in my buddies wedding. That’s how much I believe in the fashionability of this watch. Now if camo isn’t your thing SWOLE O’clock makes many other color combos that will go with a plethora of outfits. Guy or girl.

The Focus Blend consists of N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, Phosphatidyl Serine and L-Taurine at a total of 390mg. According to Examine.com, L-Taurine should be dosed between 500-2,000mg for effectiveness. This right here tells you that the cognitive enhancing functionality of this product is under dosed. Collectively these ingredients improve cognitive functionality but not at the dosage in this product.
The Performance Blend is where you are going to find your real coffee. The Performance Blend contains 8,097mg of instant coffee powder, Beta Alanine, Creatine Monohydrate, L-Arginine Alpha Ketogluterate, L-Histidine HCl, and Caffeine Anhydrous. These are listed in order. This means that the highest concentration in this blend comes from the instant coffee powder. We’re not sure how much instant coffee is in this, your household packets of instant coffee are 2g, roughly but we have to assume this is a bit higher. Beta Alanine is properly dosed around 3-3.2g. Creatine Monohydrate is properly dosed around 5g. Between Beta Alanine and Creatine that would be 8g which would make up this whole proprietary blend. We are well aware that this blend is going to be under dosed as well.
The last area of concern for me is the use of non-dairy creamer. I am not a fan of this being used in any sports supplement. Now the label doesn’t make any strong claims towards this, so that was refreshing. For a pre-workout supplement it is essentially non-effective for me. Muscle Marinade has a 5:1:1 ratio BCAA inclusion in this pre-workout. Typically post workout you want a 2:1:1 ratio on BCAA so I would have liked to see that ratio here instead of the 5:1:1 but still a nice inclusion to this pre-workout. You are getting 5g of this. This is dosed appropriately.
Next you are getting the Mind/Muscle Nootropic Blend. This is the area that provides the energy and the focus. There are over 3 grams of Nootropics and another 450mg of caffeine sources. It starts with 2.5g of Choline Bitrate which is a cognitive boosting ingredient. This is higher than your typical dosage which is awesome. L-Tyrosine comes in at 400mg which is just shy of the optimal 500mg. This is an anti-stressor which works well to improve your mood and focus. Next you get 450mg of varying caffeine sources. You get 200mg of Caffeine Anhydrous and 250mg of Sustained Release Caffeine. This provides the instant energy you are looking for as well as energy throughout your lift. Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCl improves memory and blood flow to your brain. This could be dosed higher. Finally you get 75mg of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine which is just a faster absorbing form of L-Tyrosine.
Finally you get your NOX Blend. This is your pump. Everyone loves a pump. You are getting 999mg of NO3-T Sodium Nitrates, VasoDrive-AP, and NO3-T Betaine Nitrate. This is similar to their pump product NOXygen.

It really depends on what you are looking for from a product. If you want that pump then there is no need to spend another $20-$30 on a pump product, this making this more valuable. Our first experience with Gold Star was in 2015 with the original Triple X pre-workout, which got a lot of hype and craze. We loved it then, so we were excited to try their new Triple X pre-workout.
Triple X utilizes DMHA, the second coming of DMAA, to provide a kick-in-the-ass blast of energy. You also get 350mg of Caffeine Anhydrous with every serving as well. Overall, Triple X does focus on three areas: power, energy and focus. We then look at effectiveness. An effective pre-workout will use high quality, proven ingredients, at clinically backed dosages. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.
Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Blue Raspberry.
Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.
Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. The proprietary blend is 7,316mg of 8 ingredients. The first ingredient listed is L-Citrulline. This provides a nice increase of nitric oxide production in your body thus producing a better pump which improves power and endurance. Regarding the optimal dosage I have seen this higher than 6g. I think it is safe to say that there is not 6g of L-Citrulline in this, but there is a fair amount since it is listed first. The second ingredient is Beta-Alanine which has been shown to increase strength output. This is optimally dosed around 2g. Next we have Creatine Monohydrate which also has shown to increase strength and power. This is optimally dosed at 5g. Then we get into the DMHA.
DMHA is caffeine on steroids. It produces energy. Typically dosages of this is 150-200mg that I have seen in other PWOs. Eria Jarensis produces that euphoric feel-good feeling we get from increased levels of Dopamine and Noradrenaline. This ingredient is very similar to DMAA. Not a bad thing. We have very little research on proper dosages.
For the next ingredient we have Hordenine HCl, which is typically used in fat burners as it speeds up your metabolism. Then we get to the Nootropic in this pre-workout, Phenylpiracetam. There is no optimal dosage of this at this point but it is typically taken at 200-600mg per day. Last we have Huperzine-A which is another cognitive enhancing ingredient. We would typically see this at 50-200mcg per day.
Triple X uses some very good ingredient combinations. I really like the use of Caffeine Anhydrous with DMHA AND Eria Jarensis, I just wish I knew what we were getting in terms of dosage on the two latter ingredients. The use of Nootropics (Phenylpiracetam) is big. Nootropics are gaining steam in the pre-workout supplement market and I was happy to see it used here. You are laser focused when you take Triple X and you’re ready to push through your workout thanks to the Caffeine Anhydrous, DMHA and Eria Jarensis.
