Fat burners are some of the most controversial supplements on the market. Some say they are completely worthless, and even dangerous. Some will tell you they are glorified caffeine products. We can’t blame these people, as the way some of them are marketed, it certainly seems somewhat irresponsible.

We have put together a list of companies who make products which can HELP you stick to your diet and potentially make your weight loss journey a bit easier. We have to be honest, they will NOT do anything magical. You have to have your diet and exercise in check in order to lose weight. The products have certain aspects to them which may help. They may give you energy, which some people have issues with when they diet due to cutting their calories. They may suppress your appetite, which is usually the most helpful thing you’ll get out of them. Finally, they may increase your metabolism slightly, which will add up over the 4-8 weeks you run them to give you a slight edge.

You can of course burn fat without these products, however we honestly feel that these may make it easier for the reasons mentioned above.

When Should I Use A Fat Burner Supplement

Let's make one thing perfectly clear: a fat burner supplement will not magically rid you of all your fat. You must also do work, coupled with a healthy diet, to lose weight and ultimately to shred body fat. A well-dosed fat burner can aid in fat loss, but it cannot do it alone.

All too often we see companies tout a miracle pill for fat loss. The funny thing is that those pills are always under-dosed. The five best fat burner supplements you find on this list are going to aid in fat loss, but again, you must also be willing to do some work.

A good fat burner supplement will give you that extra 5-10% needed to shed that extra belly fat, but ONLY if you have everything else dialed in. You must exercise, and you must eat right. A healthy diet, adequate exercise and one of our top five rated fat burner supplements can help you lose that extra layer of fat that has been bugging you.

What To Look For In A Fat Burner

Fat burner supplements are going to be filled with a lot of ingredients, whether they are in powder form or capsule form. Most of these ingredients, in the majority of over-the-counter fat burners, are going to be under-dosed. A well-dosed fat burning supplement should tackle several areas of the fat loss journey. Some, not all, tackle all of the "pillars" but what is important is that the fat burner of choice addresses as many as they can.

Energy Expenditure/Metabolism Boost

Energy expenditure is a fancy name for fat burning. You want to make sure your fat burner has ingredients that will aid in increased energy expenditure because this means more calories are being burned for fuel. The more calories burned, the more weight is lost. Typical ingredients to look for are Caffeine, Yohimbine, Synephrine, Grains of Paradise and various forms of Carnitine. These ingredients will aid in stimulating the central nervous system to burn more calories as fuel. Other effects from these ingredients may be increased body temperature and appetite suppression.

Thermogenic/Body Temperature

Thermogenic means an increase in body temperature. This comes in the form of calories being burned as energy, but there are other important ingredients that aid in this. A good fat burner will increase body temperature to where it is noticeably working as you sweat profusely. Ingredients to look for are Grains of Paradise, Vanillin, GBB, Cocoabuterol and more.

Appetite Suppression

Appetite suppression is a main component of many fat burners. This is because to lose weight the formula is simple: calories in < calories out. You want to burn more calories than you eat. By limiting your food intake (in a healthy approach) you can burn more fat. Stimulants help with appetite suppression, so ingredients like Caffeine are good for this.

Blood Sugar/Insulin Resistance

This is a fairly new component of fat burners. The ability to metabolize blood glucose allows the body to burn it as energy instead of store as fat. We need carbohydrates in our life to restore glycogen, but too much glucose can lead to it being stored as fat. Ingredients such as Banaba are gaining popularity in fat burners as it aids in regulating blood glucose levels.

#1 Ghost Burn Black

ghost burn
  • Rating: 8.9 out of 10
  • Servings: 40/20 Servings
  • Best For: Top Overall Product

Use coupon code INFORMANT to save 20%

Pros

  • Taste
  • 300mg Caffeine
  • 40mg Grains of Paradise
  • 600mg KSM-66 Ashwagandha
  • 500mg L-Tyrosine
  • 50mg GBB

Cons

  • Taste has a spice to it
  • Mixability isn't perfect

GHOST Burn Black  is a newcomer to the market, and it certainly deserves this spot on the list. To make this simple, Ghost Burn Black is Ghost Burn with a few minor tweaks, or improvements rather. With the original Ghost Burn being our #1 fat burner of the year for 2019, there was no reason to not have Burn Black as our #1 now, as no thermogenic on the market has really stepped in to take its place in our eyes.

The profile starts off with 3 grams of Carnitine, 1.5g from ALCAR and 1.5g LCLT. These are great forms of Carnitine, and they can aid in fat loss, performance, focus, and recovery. Both are at good doses . Following this you get 1.5 grams of Garcinia Cambogia with a 60% standardization of Hydroxycitric Acid. This may aid in appetite suppression, and although we are not sold on the ingredient, we still enjoy it Ghost does use a higher standardization than many other companies, as you'll usually see it at 50% and with less.

Next we have Choline Bitartrate which may convert to Acetylcholine in the brain. It is not the best form of Choline, but it is as a dose that it higher than what many other brands use. Along with this Choline, you get a clinical dose of KSM-66. KSM-66 is essentially Ashwagandha, which is great for stress. Decreasing stress is  a great way to help with fat loss. Some people overdo it when it comes to stimulants. While stimulants can certainly help with fat loss, they do increase cortisol as a side effect. Excess cortisol can hinder fat loss, therefore having an ingredient to counteract this is great to see in a fat burner.

Of course, you also get a solid dose of Grains of Paradise. While Grains of Paradise has great human studies behind it, it does taste quite “peppery”. This is the only drawback to Ghost Burn, as the flavor is affected by it slightly. Either way, it’s great to see in Burn Black. With 40mg, it is at a good dose. You also get Neurofactor™ in here, which may aid with focus, and along with the Tyrosine, can certainly help as well.

What we find to be the biggest addition to this blend, is the GBB, which can increase Carnitine levels in the body. This ingredient has a side effect that will make you sweat. By sweat, we mean that you will sweat for no reason. This makes Ghost Burn Black our strongest thermogenic on this list. The only ingredient they really took out is the Synephrine. While we like Synephrine, GBB is a stronger ingredient.

With all of that said, we have no problems putting this as our #1 fat burner. Ghost really just took Burn and made it better.

Who Makes It?

GHOST is a fully transparent brand in the supplement industry. They are more than a supplement brand, they are a lifestyle (that's really what they are going for). They could easily attract consumers with their amazing YouTube Channel and marketing campaigns, which they do, but they keep them with their quality formulas and products.

What's in it?

One serving (two scoops) contains:

  • 1.5g L-Carnitine Tartrate - helps transport fatty acid cells to be used as energy
  • 1.5g Acetyl-L-Carnitine - good for transporting fatty acids to be used as energy, also helps with focus
  • 1.5g Garcinia Cambogia - may aid with appetite suppression
  • 1g Choline Bitartrate - helps with focus
  • 600mg KSM-66 Ashwagandha - patented form of Ashwagandha, good for stress levels
  • 500mg L-Tyrosine - amino acid that helps with focus
  • 300mg Natural Caffeine- helps with energy
  • 100mg NeuroFactor - patented ingredient good for energy
  • 40mg Grains of Paradise - a fat burning ingredient with human research to back it
  • 50mg ProGBB - an ingredient that raises Carnitine levels in the body
  • 20mg Theobromine - a molecule similar to caffeine, helps with energy
  • 50mg AstraGin - helps with absorption

Bottom Line:

Ghost Burn Black is a great thermogenic, and it deserves this spot. With Ghost Burn being the #1 fat burner on this page last year, and very few products trying to take its place, we now have a product that took that and made it even better. Might look weird to have both Ghost Burn Black and Ghost Burn as the #1 and #2 spots, but if they already made the best on our site better, then we can't really change anything.

#2 Alpha Lion SuperHuman Burb

Superhuman Burn
  • Rating: 8.9 out of 10
  • Servings: 40/20
  • Best For: Pre-Workout

Use coupon code INFORMANT to save 15%

Pros

  • Doubles as Pre-Workout
  • 300mg Caffeine
  • 40mg of CaloriBurn®
  • 500mg MitoBurn™
  • 1000mg L-Tyrosine
  • Transparent Formula

Cons

  • Taste isn't perfect

SuperHuman Burn is a product from Alpha Lion, and it is really becoming one of our favorite pre-workouts for the year of 2020. Alpha Lion already has multiple variations of SuperHuman pre-workouts, and they have all been impressive to us.

SuperHuman Burn is a pre-workout that is meant to help with fat loss, however just looking at the profile, it is much more than that. It starts off with a performance blend which consists of Citrulline, Beta-Alanine, and Taurine. All of them are at solid doses, and they can aid with pumps and endurance. Following this you get the energy blend, which consists of 300mg of total Caffeine, coming from both Caffeine Anhydrous and Infinergy (a time-released Caffeine). So you get energy immediately, and then energy that is released slowly to help prevent a crash. You also get 225mg of Theanine, which can help reduce anxiety or jitters brought on by Caffeine.

Next up, we have what really makes this product special. The Fat Burning Matrix starts us off with a new ingredient introduced to the market called MitoBurn™. This ingredient is a source of BAIBA, which is a myokine that your body releases when you workout. This ingredient may be good for oxidizing fat, as well as lowering blood sugar. It is what really separates this product from the rest. Along with this interesting new ingredient, you get you get a Cocoabuterol®, Advantra Z® (a source of Synephrine), and CaloriBurn GP™, which is Grains of Paradise. These are all solid ingredients and they are all dosed well.

Finally, this rounds out with a nootropic blend and absorption blend. You get 1 gram of Choline Bitartrate, 1 gram of ALCAR, and 1 gram of Choline Bitartrate. These are 3 ingredients that can help with focus, and all are dosed well. After this we get both AstraGin® and BioPerine® at solid doses, which may aid in absorption.

Due to the profile and marketing, it is meant to be taken pre-workout. With that said, you could technically take it at any time of the day. This is deserving of its spot on our list easily, and we love seeing Alpha Lion not be afraid to use new interesting ingredients such as MitoBurn™.

Who Makes It?

Alpha Lion is a newer company, but with clever marketing and solid products, they have burst onto the scene. With awesome products, cool product names, great flavoring, if you haven't tried Alpha Lion yet, it is worth

Use coupon code INFORMANT to save 20%

Pros

  • Taste
  • 300mg Caffeine
  • 50mg Grains of Paradise
  • 600mg KSM-66 Ashwagandha
  • 500mg L-Tyrosine
  • Transparent Formula

Cons

  • Taste has a spice to it
  • Mixability isn't perfect

GHOST Burn was our Top Rated fat burner for the year of 2019,  and it has certainly already made a name for itself. Great marketing aside, Ghost knows how to formulate effective products. Ghost Burn is a great example of this. In this cool looking tub, we get a transparent profile with some very solid ingredients. To start, you get 3 grams of Carnitine… more specifically, 1.5 grams of Acetyl-L-Carnitine, and 1.5 grams of L-Carnitine Tartrate. ALCAR has nootropic benefits, and is our favorite form of Carnitine.

Along with this solid dose of Carnitine, you get a clinical dose of KSM-66. KSM-66 is essentially Ashwagandha, which is great for stress. Decreasing stress is  a great way to help with fat loss. Some people overdo it when it comes to stimulants. While stimulants can certainly help with fat loss, they do increase cortisol as a side effect. Of course, you also get a solid dose of Grains of Paradise. While Grains of Paradise has great human studies behind it, it does taste quite “peppery”. This is the only drawback to Ghost Burn, as the flavor is affected by it slightly. Either way, it’s great to see in Burn.

Where Ghost Burn shines is in the nootropic department. With L-Tyrosine, ALCAR, Choline Bitartrate, and Neurofactor™, this is one of the top supplements for flat out focus, as far as fat burners go that is. So much so, that our user started using as a pre-workout. Overall, it’s a product you can tell had effectiveness in mind, and that’s what we like to see most here on FI.

Bottom Line:

Ghost Burn is well-deserving of its spot on our ranking list. When you couple a great profile with solid effectiveness, you are going to get the praise you deserve. If you’re in the market for a powdered fat burner with a solid profile that will increase energy and focus, while also decreasing stress, Ghost Burn should be at the top of your list for options.

#4 Core Nutritionals Burn X

Core Burn X
  • Rating: 8.6 out of 10
  • Servings: 50 servings
  • Best For: Appetite Suppression

Use coupon code INFORMANT to save 20%

Pros

  • Great Appetite Suppression
  • ALCAR
  • Clean Energy
  • Transparent label
  • Time-Released Caffeine
  • KSM-66

Cons

  • Taste
  • Some ingredients lower than we'd like

Burn X comes in at #4 on our list here. It certainly impressed us with its effective appetite suppression effects.

Burn X starts us off with ALCAR, which is our favorite form of Carnitine here on FI. It actually aids in focus. At 500mg, if you take this twice a day, you're getting a good dose. Following this comes KSM-66 at 300mg. This is a solid dose, and again, if you dose this twice a day, you're getting a clinical dose.

Following this comes Garcinia Cambodia and Green Coffee Bean Extract. Both of these ingredients were made famous on Dr Oz years ago. While Garcinia isn't our favorite ingredients here on FI, the Green Coffee Bean contains Chlorogenic Acid, which may be good for healthy blood sugar levels. The next three ingredients are Yerba Mate, Cocoa Extract, and Caffeine Anhydrous. Cocoa Extract provides Theobromine, which may aid in energy, and the 150mg of Caffeine Anhydrous will provide energy.

After this comes Bacopa Extract, followed by Zum-XR®. Bacopa has many benefits, but it's mostly known for it's nootropic benefits. Zum-XR is a type of Caffeine that does not hit your immediately.

Who Makes It?

Core Nutritionals doesn’t do anything sexy about their packaging, but what’s inside of those units is sexy. Core Nutritionals focuses on creating and developing some of the best products on the market. Core ABC is just one example. With Core Nutritionals you can expect full transparency and top-of-the-line quality.

What's In It?

One serving (two-scoops) contains:

  • 500mg ALCAR- good for transporting fatty acids to be used as energy, also helps with focus
  • 300mg KSM-66® - trademarked form of Ashwagandha, good for stress levels
  • 250mg Garcinia Cambogia - Blocks an enzyme called citrate lyase, which the body uses to make fat
  • 250mg Green Coffee Extract - Source of Chlorogenic Acid which may boost metabolism
  • 250mg Yerba Mate Extract - Caffeine source
  • 200mg Cocoa Extract - Source of xanthines such as Caffeine and Theobromine
  • 150mg Caffeine Anhydrous - provides energy
  • 100mg Bacopa Extract - aids in hydration
  • 70mg Zum-XR®- aids in hydration
  • 15mg SaffSerene - Trademarked form of Saffron Extract that has been shown to be good for appetite suppression

Bottom Line:

Core Burn X makes this list as it is very effective when it comes to appetite suppression. The energy can't be overlooked either! While we could do without some ingredients, the effectiveness more than makes up for it.

#5 Performax Labs OxyMax

Performax Labs OxyMax
  • Rating: 8.6 out of 10
  • Servings: 30
  • Best For: Capsule Form

Pros

  • Great Energy
  • Great Appetite Suppression
  • Thermogenesis
  • Well-Dosed
  • Transparent Label
  • Capsule Form

Cons

  • Some ingredients may not be around much longer

OxyMax is the first capsule product that we decided to add to this list, and we can’t give it enough credit. Our user for OxyMax really enjoyed the appetite suppression he got out of this. It may be the most noticeable effect from OxyMax, and may arguably be the most important aspect to any fat burner.

Now the majority of the fat burners we have put on this list have been powders. While powders are nice, as they increase your water intake, they may taste good, they may hit you somewhat faster than capsules. The one thing powdered fat burners don’t have over powders, is convenience. It’s much easier to pop a couple of pills.

Either way, Oxymax gets it right where it counts. If you want a more detailed description of OxyMax, check out the review. To give you a quick rundown, it is effective as an energy enhancer, and appetite suppressant, and as a thermogenic. Compared to other fat burners on the market, it has a moderate dose of caffeine. 250mg of caffeine is actually considered low these days when you compare it to the average 300mg+ you see in many other stim-based products these days. It’s more than enough to give you a nice boost for sure. Along with the caffeine, you get both Eria Jarensis and B-Phenethylamine, 2 strong stimulants which give you energy and may suppress your appetite.

OxyMax is not just a stim pill, it also has some ingredients which are solely known for fat loss. You get 40mg of Paradoxine, also known as Grains of Paradise. This is an ingredient backed by human studies, and thermogenesis is certainly noticeable. The other ingredients are Forskolin and Fucoxanthin, both dosed well. We also have both Hordenine and Higenemine here at decent doses, and they both may aid in energy.

To round it out you get some Alpha-Yohimbine, and Black Pepper Extract. Alpha-Yohimbine is the one ingredient in here which may give people some side effects, including jitters, anxiety, and even nausea. You will eventually develop a tolerance to it, but we felt as if we should warn you. The Black Pepper Extract aids in absorption.

Who Makes It?

Performax Labs is one of the companies on the market that doesn’t get the attention they deserve. They are known for making some of the stronger formulas on the market, and you can almost bet that anything they come out with is going to impress the supplement nerds of the industry. They are known for transparent formulas, with solid dosing of ingredients.

What's In It?

One serving contains:

  • 250mg Caffeine Anhydrous - good for energy
  • 150mg Eria Jarensis Extract - natural source of N-phenethyl dimethylamine, which is a powerful stimulant
  • 125mg B-Phenylethylamine HCl - increases adrenaline and noradrenaline. May increase mood and energy.
  • 50mg Hordeum Vulgare - source of Hordenine, which is good for energy
  • 40mg Paradoxine Grains of Paradise - natural source of 6-paradol which is good for fat burning
  • 25mg Nelumbo Nucifera - source of Higenamine, which is good for energy
  • 25mg Coleus Forskolii Extract (95% Forskolin) - increases lipase, which is a fat burning hormone
  • 8mg Fucoxanthin - increases metabolism
  • 5mg Black Pepper Extract - aids in absorption
  • 2mg Rauwolfia Vomitoria - Alpha-Yohimbine, powerful ingredient for fat loss
OxyMax Label

Bottom Line:

Performax Labs makes some great products, and Oxymax is no different. If you’re looking for a thermogenic that isn’t in a powder form, this is a great option. The energy is solid, the appetite suppression is great, and thermogenesis is noticeable.

Our Pre-Workout Supplement Testing Process

We examined five different areas of each pre-workout supplement when we compiled our rankings:

  1. Ingredients Profile
  2. Effectiveness
  3. Taste
  4. Mixability
  5. Value

preworkout powder in bottle

Ingredients Profile

When we review each pump activating supplement on their ingredient profile, we look at the active ingredients being used and their dosages.

Many pre-workout supplements include a variety of beneficial ingredients, but under dose them proving to be non-effective.

Effectiveness

Effectiveness is an extension of ingredient profile. If the product uses proven ingredients at clinically suggested dosages, the product should be effective.

Everyone is different. Everyone takes to different ingredients differently at varying dosages. We have tried and tested each of these products throughout the full duration of their container to ensure these products are effective over their life.

Taste

We review taste on two different components. First, how close does the muscle pump supplement taste to the actual name printed on the label. For example, does Blue Raz actually taste like blue raspberry. Second, we review it on overall taste (in our opinion) versus others in the same flavor category.

Mixability

Mixability refers to how well does the product mix in 8-12oz of water. The testing process for a pump activating drink we use here is a generic Blender Bottle with the chrome spiral ball. We use regular tap water with no ice.

Value

Value is a combination of ingredient profile, effectiveness, taste, mixability and cost. We do not just look at the price tag like a lot of others do. If a product is priced at a premium, we inform you if it is worth the premium price or not based on all the categories. We look at the overall picture of the  pre-workout supplement, and how it compares to other pre-workout supplements on the market.

Please Note: Many of the “top 10” lists you find online are written by content writers with no in-gym or supplement experience who are paid by the word count to write an article for a website trying to generate money.

These lists are influenced by brands who pay for placement. These lists contain pump activating supplements that are, for the lack of a better word, garbage.

The following products on our best of list were used by the author of this article. He used the pump activating supplements through the duration of a full container. Sample packs were not used in determining the rankings of the best pump producing supplements.

Stop relying on faulty information that is influenced by outside writers and money. This list is the real deal. Here at Fitness Informant, we don’t steer you wrong. Be Informed. Live Fit.
