This is something you want to keep in-mind when considering the brand. They do not make hardcore supplements for the hardcore weight lifter.

EVL ENGN Shred is a unique twist to their popular ENGN pre-workout. ENGN Shred contains a fat burning matrix along with the traditional pre-workout formula. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the pre-workout, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.

We then look at effectiveness. An effective pre-workout will use high quality, proven ingredients, at clinically backed dosages. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Fruit Punch.

Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Ingredients Profile

You won’t find DMAA or DMHA in anyone of their pre-workouts. You will find traditional ingredients used that we have all come to expect to see on a PWO label.

ENGN Shred starts off with a proprietary blend. This is something we’re not fans of ever in supplements. The prop blend is for focus. It consists of 2,016mg of Betaine Anhydrous, Choline Bitartrate, L-Tyrosine, Agmatine Sulfate, Alpha GPC and Hyperzia serrata extract.

Betaine Anhydrous is used to increase your strength output and athletic performance. Evidence that this helps with power output occurs at 2,500-6,000mg. I have seen PWOs dosed at 2.5 grams before which would put it over the whole prop blend here. It is safe to say that we are under dosed on the first major ingredient in this group.

Choline Bitartrate, L-Tyrosine, Alpha GPC and Hyperzia serrata extract are all used to improve your focus. These are common ingredients used. In fact, I am a huge fan of Alpha GPC. However, given that this is found in the prop blend, we can assume that they are all pretty low dosed. I have seen L-Tyrosine dosed at 1-1.5g before. Alpha GPC can be dosed at 300mg and higher. Choline Bitartrate can be anywhere between 250 and 1,000mg. As you can see this portion alone would most likely fall under the under dosed label.

Agmatine Sulfate is a pump enhancer. This would help with strength output as well. Being in this prop blend I cannot imagine there is a high dosage, since it falls later in the list of ingredients. Typically dosages of Agmatine is 500mg and higher.

We get 1.6g of Beta Alanine with this. The clinical dosage is double that, so you would need 2-scoops to get the correct dosage of BA.

The Shred Matrix is open label. It consists of popular ingredients used to “shred” fat. CLA comes in at 500mg. I actually supplement with CLA that is a minimum of 1,000mg. Then we get L-Carnitine L-Tartrate at 500mg. Again, I use this supplement outside of this and it is 1,500mg. Coleus extract, per Examine.com, is used to boost testosterone and burn fat. Recommended daily dosage is 500mg while this contains only 100mg. ENGN Shred contains Capsimax® at 25mg. This is essentially cayenne pepper. You will feel your body temp increase and your stomach “burn” from this. The purpose is to raise your body temp to “melt” off fat. Lastly, we get 40mg of Yohimbe Extract. This is another fat burning compound. This is dosed actually rather high compared to other pre-workouts I have seen. A typical dosage for a 200lb man is 18mg.

The last part of the label is the “energy” matrix. This is going to be 260mg of natural caffeine rom coffee beans and green tea. Both of these are shown to increase energy and burn fat. You won’t get the “cracked” out feeling from this as you would with 300+mg of Caffeine Anhydrous. If you are a big caffeine nut then this isn’t the best for you.

Overall, the profile uses some solid ingredients. At the end of the day, the doses in the prop blend, and even the open label portion, are less than optimal. You would want to take two scoops of this to get you to where you’d most likely want to be in terms of dosage. Effectiveness

(5/10)[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]Regarding the effectiveness of ENGN Shred we look at energy and strength output, along with the fat burning capabilities of the PWO. The user who used this product for the full container re-affirmed that the product does, in fact, raise his body temperature quite a bit. He sweat a lot more than normal. That is the point of the Shred Matrix.

Although he liked the increased body temperature and the use of the fat burning ingredients he didn’t get a good energy kick, pump or focus from the product. (See our top pre workout fat burner products here) If you go back to our profile section we mention that the prop blend for the “memory” portion was under dosed. This would explain why there wasn’t a huge positive impact on cognitive enhancing functions.

Regarding the lack of pump, the only ingredient in this product that essentially contributes to the pump was the Agmatine Sulfate and we’re pretty certain it isn’t dosed at 500mg where it should be.

EVL does it right with their take on fruit punch. It tastes very similar to a lot of their fruit punch products. Mixability

We didn’t have any issues with mixability outside of the normal residue you’d expect from PWOs. You can expect that they would need to have a reduced price tag on this versus some of the fully disclosed clinically dosed PWOs on the market. And it is. ENGN Shred retails for less than $30. This would be $1 per serving. If you have to double up on scoops to get a better dosage then you are talking $2 per serving.

This day and age in the industry with pre-workouts you are expected to pay $2+ per serving for an effective pre-workout. The fact that this product is under dosed maybe too much in certain aspects doesn’t make it as valuable. However, if you are a first timer, or just looking for something to help with your cardio, then this wouldn’t be a bad choice for you. Ingredients Profile

Level Up is no different. This is a big disappointment for us as we’d like to see if we’re dosed properly on ingredients. However, under the profile, we look at the ingredients used, then address dosage down the line.

Level Up starts with Bulbine Natalensis. According to Examine.com, Bulbine Natalensis is quite potent and typically used in test boosters. Per studies in rats it has been shown to drastically increase test levels. Solid choice of an ingredient

The next ingredient is NMDA (N-Methyl-D-aspartate). This ingredient is known to stimulate the brain to produce higher levels of testosterone, however there is not enough evidence to support this claim 100%. We would rather see the use of DAA here instead of NMDA.

4-Hydroxyisoleucine is used next. This has been known to normalize glucose metabolism. This is typically found in Fenugreek…an ingredient commonly found in test boosters. This ingredient may be a bit high up on the ingredient list.

We then get into Bulgarian Tribulus Terrestris. This is a very common ingredient used in test boosters. It’s known to increase your libido and sexual well-being. There is not a lot of evidence to support these claims, but sexual well-being is important when you come off any cycles and need to improve your testosterone levels. Common ingredient and acceptable here.

DIM (Di-Indoly Methane) is used in a lot of test boosters as well as here. DIM is used to increase estrogen metabolism and improve your overall hormone balance. DIM is a solid ingredient used in any PCT/test booster to help support healthy hormone levels.

Avena Sativa comes from oats. Yes, oats. This ingredient has been shown to increase your sexual stimulation. Who doesn’t love that in a test booster?

Zinc Gluconate is used to fight against zinc deficiency. Zinc is a very important mineral to our growth. Overall if you are trying to get bigger you want to make sure you have a sufficient amount of zinc that you’re consuming in your diet. A deficiency could be detrimental to your gains. If you’re taking a test booster you are doing so as you want to either gain mass or maintain your gains you just made.

Having low-T can cause unwanted fatigue. Part of the reason you want to raise your test levels is so your energy levels come back to normal. Rhodiola Root is used here to eliminate fatigue. There is not a lot of evidence here to prove this is true, but various studies point to that as the end result.

Maca Root promotes healthy prostate health and sperm production. Anytime you use an anabolic you want to use something in your PCT to promote a healthy prostate. Sperm production can be effected by a cycle as well, so Maca Root is a great ingredient used to help in those categories.

Horny Goat Weed is one of the most popular ingredients used in test boosters. It’s primary use is to help with ED (erectile dysfunction) and sexual health. If you go back to some of the other ingredients listed here you know that we are a fan of the use of this ingredient.

The last ingredient used on the prop blend is Eurycoma Longifolia. Studies show that this ingredient is a pro-fertility agent and an anti-estrogen ingredient. Dosage

We don’t know the exact dosage of each ingredient. Here’s what we do know: 11 ingredients make up 1325mg of a prop blend. Let’s take a look at a couple of the ingredients, in order, to see what proper dosage would be. Then we can determine if this is under dosed in areas.

Bulbine Natalensis: being 200lbs I would need about 730mg to be optimally dosed.
NMDA: could not find an optimal dosage on this, plus the reports indicate there’s not a ton of positives from this in a test booster. I would have rather seen DAA.
4-Hydroxyisoleucine: this is a key compound to Fenugreek which we typically want dosed at 500-600mg for effectiveness on test boosting capabilities.
Bulgarian Tribulus Terrestris: this ingredient is 80% Saponins, which is higher than the typcial 60% you see, so optimal dosage would be between 150mg and 340mg.

The moral of the story when it comes to dosage of Level Up is that it follows the typical OTC suit in that it is going to be under dosed in a lot of the ingredients, if not all. Based on effectiveness something has to be dosed near the right level (hopefully Bulbine Natalensis). Just a look at the first four ingredients, at optimal dosages, we would be over the amount of the prop blend.

So you might think, so what? If it works…we don’t think that way. Effectiveness

Typically when I see an OTC test booster, especially a prop blend, I write it off as an immediate failure. This time I was optimistic. I was coming off a cycle of SARMs which has been known to suppress testosterone. I actually decided this time around I was going to get a blood test. Below are the results of test one, taken on the last week of the SARM cycle:

Total Testosterone: 99 ng/dL (normal: 250-1100)
Free Testosterone: 29.1 pg/mL (normal: 35-155)

I knew that my test levels would be reduced, but I had no idea that they would drop this much. So obviously I was a bit concerned and wanted to run Level Up to see if it would help…or was I just naturally low in testosterone.

I ran Level Up for 30-days and then got my second blood test. The results of that are below:

Total Testosterone: 354 ng/dL
Free Testosterone: 55.9 pg/mL

WOW! I was actually shocked by how much it rose. Now I am not going to attribute it 100% to Level Up. Your body’s natural test production would increase naturally when you come off any anabolic. So I knew it would rise. I just didn’t know if it would be this much.

Overall it worked. It’s effective. I have the blood work to prove it.

Ingredients Profile

The delivery system of going through your upper or lower lip while you workout has it’s advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that the ingredients are absorbed into your bloodstream through your lip without ever having to go through your digestive system. This could change the way we think about proper dosages. Clinical studies talk about oral consumption of popular ingredients, nothing I can find that talks about entering the bloodstream without going through the digestive system.

Why is this important? PRE-CHAW may look under dosed on certain ingredients compared to other PWOs on the market, but those other PWOs are consumed orally. It is hard to say whether or not the ingredients are dosed correctly given the way they are consumed, but we can look at each ingredient and what it does.

PRE-CHAW packs in 1.4 grams of ingredients into a hemp pouch. That isn’t a lot of active ingredients. It starts with 20mg of Niacin then moves into 500mg of L-Tyrosine. L-Tyrosine is an anti-stressor, which helps you get into the right mindset for your lift. According to Examine.com, L-Tyrosine is dosed at 500-2000mg. Given the way this is taken I would say it is dosed properly.

Then we get 250mg of GABA. GABA is a form of a nootropic and anti-stressor as well. Studies show this is dosed between 3,000-5,000mg for enhancing growth hormone metabolism (we find this in sleep aids). This is drastically less than that. We need more here.

Now we get into the energy portion of PRE-CHAW. We get 200mg of Caffeine Anhydrous. This is a typical caffeine source used in PWOs. I see caffeine dosed anywhere from 150-300mg in effective PWOs. Siberian Ginseng Extract is used at 200mg and, according to WebMD.com, is used to increase athletic performance. Studies indicate that a dosage of 300-1,200mg are typical, although 2-4g is recommended. We are low here as well.

Yohimbine Extract is dosed at 7.5mg, which is shown to increase your adrenaline. Recommended dosages are based on bodyweight but a 200lb person would need about 18mg of this to be effective.

Overall you have to take into account how the product is consumed. There is some leeway in proper dosages because of that, one would think, but overall still not the best dosed product. It’s tough when you have a small pouch.

The other side of the coin, the negative side, to how this product is consumed, is the limited space for ingredients. Common ingredients for pump like Agmatine or L-Cittruline have to be ignored due to the higher dosage required. Other cognitive enhancing ingredients like Alpha GPC are not used because you’re limited in space. Effectiveness

I am a higher stim guy so I would use two of this (makes for a FAT lip). I was pleasantly surprised by the feeling I got from PRE-CHAW. My energy levels were great. I figured that they would diminish but given that it was dosed at 200mg (I used two so I was at 400mg) you could feel the energy you got from the pouch. I would also use this prior to athletic competitions, and during, and it worked.

The focus was non-existent. I am a big cognitive enhancing ingredient guy. The limited space of the pouch limits what you can get with this PWO. I think the addition of a nootropic like Alpha-GPC would be great here to help more with the focus factor, but overall it wasn’t bad.

Missing from this is the pump factor. There isn’t one ingredient in PRE-CHAW that provides a pump.

If you put this into perspective, there are other PWOs on the market for the same price. Then there are ones for $40 but are only 20-servings. Then you need to think that each serving is only 1.4 grams versus a minimum of 8-10 grams for the other lightly dosed PWOs.

I understand there is a higher cost associated with this delivery method. You have to pay for the hemp pouches and use a manufacture that most likely isn’t doing the sports nutrition thing for a living. With all that being said I think this product is an OK value. It works. It just misses on some of the ingredients I would like to see. At $1/serving you can afford to try it out to see if this is right for you. Once a concrete study comes out that proves PRE-CHAW is better absorbed into the bloodstream than the others then this would become a really good value product.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Effectiveness

(10/10)[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]I will be the first the admit that I do not follow the ketogenic diet. However, I wanted to see how effective this product actually was. I judged it on two things:

1.) Does it take me into ketosis in less than 60-minutes as promised?

2.) Does it provide sustainable energy where I can use this as a pre-workout?

The answer to both questions was a resounding yes. The question then is, how do I know? I was given urine analysis strips to pee on to determine if my body was in the state of ketosis. I would pee on a strip prior to taking KETO. Then I would pee on another strip about 10-minutes after taking KETO. Nothing. After about 45-50 minutes I would do it again. This time I would be peeing ketones. See our video for the actual photos of the ketone strips.

There’s the proof that my body went into a state of ketosis in under 60-minutes. But the next question is still here. How was my athletic performance? I used KETO prior to a lift session and even before a softball game and my performance was just as good, if not better than I perform on a pre-workout. There was no crash with KETO either.

Taste

Raspberry Lemonade: (8/10)[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]I was told prior to taking KETO that the Raspberry Lemonade might not be as good as their other flavors. I have not tried their other flavors but Raspberry Lemonade was good. It wasn’t as refreshing as your typical sugary lemonade, duh, but it was still very good. I have had BCAAs before that were better tasting but if you look at the profile you see there is no artificial ingredients and sweeteners in this to mask the taste. KETO retails for less than $50 for 20-servings. This can seem high on the surface, but based on the effectiveness and what it does I think the pricing model is correct. This product takes you from a norma metabolic state to ketosis in 60-minutes. You also have a fully open label.

Oh and don’t forget that this works as a pre-workout to provide energy to improve athletic performance. Ingredients Profile

(7/10)[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20″][vc_column_text]Each serving of NOXygen is only 2.8g in size. What’s unique about their serving is that it is clumpy. It is not a normal powder you would typically find in a supplement. You get a full 40-servings per container.

NOXygen utilizes two main ingredients: HydroMax and NO3. HydroMax is glycerol which essentially keeps your muscles full of water during your lift. This gives you amazing pumps and extra endurance to keep lifting. This is dosed at 1.5g which is awesome. Per TigerFitness.com you want to consume between .7 and 2g of HydroMax for optimal pumps.

NO3 is Nitrate which is a NO boosting agent. NOXygen uses a patent NO3-T ingredient in the form of Sodium Nitrate and Betaine Nitrate. Collectively these two ingredients are going to increase the nitric oxide production in your body. More nitric oxide means more muscle swelling pumps. This is in a “proprietary blend” which we are not fans of, but given it is only two ingredients we can let this one by. Effectiveness

I don’t get the vascularity as some men and women do in the gym. However, NOXygen provided me with epic muscle pumps. I would take one to two servings with my pre-workout at 5am in the morning on an empty stomach. I also tried to consume a small carb to help with the absorption of the NOXygen and PWO. The results were great. I cannot recall another pump product that provided the nice pumps I was getting from NOXygen. It actually tasted like real cookie dough…the stuff I used to make when I was a kid. Monster Cookie was also delightful. If you’ve ever had monster cookie spreads before you can envision the same taste. Birthday Cake tasted more lemon to me than it did birthday cake flavor. Oree-Dough took a bit getting used too, but I loved the real Oreo Cookie chunks in it. Texture

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough was soft, like you’d expect from a cookie dough. This was another reason it scored so high on our taste test. Monster Cookie was also relatively soft and easy to spoon out.

Oree-Dough was a harder than we’d like. With the real Oreo Cookie bites I fully expected it to be a bit harder, but the actual dough was as well. Still didn’t effect the taste. Birthday Cake was hard. It was difficult to scoop out and roll into a cookie dough ball like you’d like. Maybe we just got an older batch? Use Halo Top Ice Cream for example. They charge close to $6 a pint. Same can be said for The Lions Pack edible cookie dough. A jar costs $12.99 on their website. The issue is, they aren’t that big. It’s a 10oz jar, so you’re paying more than $1 per ounce.

Overall, if you really want to try it I think it’s a good thing to splurge and get a 4-pack (cost savings) and see if it is something you’d want to continue to buy in the future. This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the pre-workout, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.

Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Ingredients Profile

I believe as the consumer we deserve the right to an open label. Unfortunately, New Jack is another prop blended pre-workout on the market. Companies will say they do this to “protect” their formula but with enough education and 3rd-party testing, you can find out anything. With that said, let’s dive into this profile.

One area we do like is the use of DiCaffeine Malate at 404mgs (providing 300mg of caffeine). DiCaffeine Malate, per TigerFitness.com, provides less of a crash than you would get wth Caffeine Anhydrous. Another common benefit is that DiCaffeine Malate doesn’t provide that sudden rush of energy, but a slower energizing feeling that lasts throughout a lift.

L-Taurine, increases muscle endurance and strength, is included in this pre-workout at 750mgs. I’ve seen this as high as 2g before in a pre-workout. Another transparent portion of the label is L-Tyrosine, increases focus, at 300mgs, but this is under-dosed as well. Again, I’ve seen this dosed in the 2g area.

The area that disturbs me is the prop blend of New Jack. It contains 6,520mgs of 8 different ingredients. The first is L-Cittruline, helps with the pump. I know that clinical dosage of L-Cittruline is 6g. That would practically take up this entire prop blend if it was clincally dosed. We can then make the educated guess that it is not properly dosed. They follow it up with Agmatine Sulfate, another pump enhancer. I’ve seen this typically dosed between 500mg-1g. This could be properly dosed, but no-way to tell based on the label.

Moving on we run into the ever-so-popular pre-workout ingredient Beta-Alanine, maximizes strength output. This is clinically dosed at 3.2g. This is third on the ingredient list so it’s a safe assumption that it is not clinically dosed. I’ve seen this between 2 and 3.2g in pre-workouts on the market.

Dendrobium Alkaloids help with your overall cognitive functions and helps improves your mood. There is not enough evidence to suggest that there is a proper dosage amount, but I do like the use of the ingredient as I am a big fan of cognitive enhancing ingredients. The next ingredient is Rauwolfia Vomitoria Extract, which also can enhance your mood. Another good ingredient we find in a lot of products on the market.

We get into 2-Amino-5-Methylhexane which is a form of DMHA. I am a fan of DMHA. In fact, I like DMHA compared to DMAA. However, not knowing the dosage hurts. We know it is higher than 50mg (the label claims 50mg of Ephedra and that’s the next ingredient). DMAA is typically dosed around 75-80mg while DMHA is around 150mg. The 2-Amino-5 variation of DMHA is said to be stronger, so less than 150mg is fine, but I don’t know if it is much higher than 50mg of Ephedra.

Speaking of Ephedra, it is important to note that Ephedrine Alkaloids are illegal. This is not the same Ephedra in this product. For those of you that had wishful thinking, think again. Now that is not to say there are not positives to Ephedra Extract, there are, they just aren’t even close to the fat loss capabilities that Ephedrine Alkaloids gave. The last ingredient is Synephrine which has been shown to increase energy, but this would be a very low dosage.

Effectiveness

For me, unfortunately, New Jack didn’t provide the type of energy, pump and focus I would look for from a pre-workout. You would think given that the two first ingredients in the prop blend were pump ingredients you would have a great pump, but I didn’t. I found myself using additive pump products to get it. I was disappointed here because I enjoyed Triple X from Gold Star Performance Products. This, to me, was a let down compared to that. I would urge you to check out the review we did on Triple X.

With the mood enhancers and cognitive function enhancers I thought I would have laser focus and I just didn’t either. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at quality of protein used, amount and other ingredients involved in the making of this protein powder.

We then look at effectiveness. A high quality protein will be effective. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the Salted Caramel Peanut Butter Cup, Vanilla Ice Cream Cookie and Chocolate Lava Cake flavors.

Mixability refers to how well the protein powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Ingredients Profile

The protein is derived from Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Hydrolysate. My big issue here is I wish they disclose how much of each you’re getting. The positive thing is that WPI is listed first before WPC. We can assume that there is little Hydrolysate in this but again, would love to see this broken out. With the serving size being 33g, that means there is 10g of “other” stuff in each serving.

Another area we like is the inclusion of the Essential Fatty Acids in the form of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). Essential Fatty Acids are “essential” to your health, hence the name. You don’t see this often in protein sources so I am a big. However, if we re-visit my previous point, NutraKey fails to disclose how much of the EFAs you’re getting. It’s listed after Sucralose on the ingredients which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The same can be said about the Digestive Enzyme Complex. In theory this is great, but without disclosing the amounts and it being listed last it doesn’t give me huge faith that there are ample amounts in Whey Optima.

Overall, the profile is good in theory. Effectiveness

Nothing wrong with that. It also contains EFAs which we like. Again, back to the profile discussion, we are unaware of the dosage we cannot be too sure to say it is ample enough to be effective. What I can touch on is that the 23g of protein from WPI, WPC, and Hydrolysate is decent. This would speed up your muscle recovery process. But unlike a pre-workout, you cannot “feel” this product working.
