I have a passion for helping women be aware of important our hormonal balances are.

There are many factors unfortunately that play in women's hormones. It is a very complex system and when one hormone is off, it impacts our bodies in many ways. The list of symptoms that can be a result of hormone imbalances is ENDLESS. Anything from energy and fatigue, to skin and hair, mood, libido (which none of us want to see decrease, especially our significant others), to our reproductive system and having babies! These all can greatly affect our day to day lives. If you battle with hormone imbalances, you know that it is not a quick fix. Anything you can do to help get your hormones back in line if they are off, sign me up!

Now let's dive in and check out what is in this product to aid in women's hormonal balances.

AstroFlav Embrace Supplement Facts

There are many products that make large claims to help with hormone balances. Finding a legitimate product that has a good ingredient list at clinical recommended dosages is not always easy. Especially if you do not know what you are looking for.

To start, the top three ingredients are going to be our vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin B6 – 25mg

Vitamin B6 does have some studies that suggests it may improve women’s progesterone and estrogen levels. It is recommended to take 1.3mg. In this formula they have 25mg. It is not recommended to take about 100mg per day. Studies have been shown to reduce homocysteine in the body with can reduce risk of Alzheimers and heart conditions. But related to hormones, Vitamin B6 has a role in controlling the action of hormones that act by binding to receptors according to this study. These hormones include androgens, oestrogens, progesterone, glucocorticoids, and thyroid hormone.

Folate – 400mg

Folate is recommended for women to take during childbearing years, but also has an impact on hormone balances. In this study analysis folate may be associated with increased progesterone levels and lower risk of lack of periods and ovulation. Folate or folic acid is long known as beneficial for hormone balance and pregnancy.

Chromium – 100mcg

Chromium is a mineral that according to this study may improve fertility in people with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS),as it may help to lower insulin levels. Insulin is known to have an impact on testosterone levels which is often high in those who have PCOS.

Maca (std 10:1) – 525mg

Maca does have studies that suggest it may improve hormone balances in premenopausal women. It is shown in this study to have an impact on both E2 (or estrodial) and LH (or Luteinizing hormone) which both play a major role in women’s hormone balances and fertility. Low estrogen levels can cause low energy, bad mood and worsened sleep.

KSM-66 (Ashwagandha Extract) – 300mg

KSM-66 is a branded ingredient of Ashwagandha Extract. There are studies that report Ashwagandha root helps manage stress by reducing the stress hormone levels in the blood. This stress-relieving effect of Ashwagandha may have a direct contribution towards better sexual health. In animal studies have confirmed Ashwagandha’s influence on sex hormone production. Ashwagandha has an impact on luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and progesterone. Thus, improving women’s quality of life.

Calcium D-Glucarate – 200mg

Calcium D-Glucarate is made by combining calcium salt of D-glucaric acid. Calcium-D-glucarate has been shown to inhibit beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme in the colon. There are risks of different cancers when this enzyme is elevated, including breast, colon and prostate. It is also shown to manage estrogen metabolism and act as a lipid-lowering agent. Taking Calcium D-Glucarate may manage estrogen dominance in women (Walaszek Z, Szemraj J, Narog M, Adams AK, Kilgore J, Sherman U, Hanausek M.)

Indole-3-Carbinol – 200mg

There have been many studies on Indole-3-Carbinol and many of its derivitives since the 1975 related to the regulation of women’s hormones relating to reducing risk of cancers, improving symptoms of endometriosis and other disorders related to hormone imbalances. 3,3ʹ-diindolylmethane (DIM) is another well known ingredient used for hormone balance. DIM is a metabolite of Indole-3-carbinol (I3C). According to this systemic review (2020), DIM derived from I3C have an impact on prevention of cancers, but also manage oestrogen and testosterone.

Green Tea (std to 98% polyphenols, 45% ECGC) – 200mg

When looking at Green Tea in this formula, we are looking at the ECGC. It yields 90mg of ECGC. ECGC is shown to both improve endothelial function and insulin sensitivity. In many women who have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) a common hormonal disorder many women battle, insulin regulation and sensitivity is a major focus for treatment. Many women with PCOS have insulin resistance. According to this study, the focus of treatment for PCOS is insulin resistance. Women with PCOS are often prescribed Metformin, a medication often used for diabetes management. As you can see in this study.

Dandelion Extract 20:1 200mg

Dandelion Extract has been studied to promote steroid hormone by increasing cell production in the ovaries. Meaning it improves ovarian endocrine function (2018). Dandelion Extract may cleanse the body of excess hormones and improve symptoms of hormone imbalance.

3,3′ -Diindolylmethane (DIM) – 150mg

3,3′-Diindolulmethane (DIM) is commonly used in hormone balancing products  due to its aromatase inhibiting properties. According to this study, DIM may improve both thyroid and estrogen levels. Recommended doses of DIM are 150-200mg and to not exceed 300mg daily.

7-Keto-DHEA – 50mg

7-keto-DHEA is a metabolite of DHEA that is nonhormonal, and it appears to be a fat loss agent as it may increase the metabolic rate according to this study. It also does appear to have anti-cortisol mechanisms, but more studies need to be completed as there is insufficient data to prove or disprove this theory. 7-keto appears to be a somewhat promising non-hormonal fat burning agent.

BioPerine – 10mg

BioPerine significantly enhances the bioavailability of various supplement nutrients through increased absorption. BioPerine is the branded ingredient form of Perine. It enhances the bodyʹs natural thermogenic activity. BioPerine is added to Embrace to increase absorption of the ingredients. Studies were completed at 5-15mg doses.

Final Takeaway

As a women who has battled with my own hormonal imbalances at many different phases in my life, I love seeing these type of products. Embrace has many ingredients that all have supported evidence to improve hormone balance. When I was researching what I could take to improve my PCOS, many of these ingredients were recommended to help improve symptoms. Instead of buying these ingredients individually, it makes sense to buy a product that have them all encompassed in one. According to the studies referenced above for each ingredient, they all follow recommended doses that may help with hormone imbalances.

Hormone imbalances for women not only affect our fertility, but also affect our quality of life day to day. Imbalances can result in hair loss, moodiness, stress, weight gain and difficulty losing weight, acne, GI symptoms, and many more according to Cleveland Clinic. Many times, medical professionals will prescribe birth control or other medications to aid in covering up these symptoms, not cure it.

I do not believe in taking birth control for amenorrhea, absent of menstrual cycle. If there are studies supporting a supplement to aid in hormone imbalances, I am all for these. Products like Embrace I wish I was aware of when I was prescribed birth control for this when I was 18 years old. I went years using birth control for irregular periods to then address the hormone imbalances later. I am excited to start these product myself as I wean breastfeeding to aid in hormone imbalances expected postpartum.
