Overview of MHP BCAA-XL Energy

MHP has debuted their performance series with new packaging and new products, as well as relaunching old successful products. MHP, once a juggernaut in the sports nutrition industry, is set to reclaim their rightful place on the throne in certain categories.

MHP’s BCAA-XL Energy is a 10:1:1 ratio BCAA product that is attempting to capitalize on the popularity of the “energy” amino category made famous by ON’s Amino Energy. BCAA-XL Energy is one of the highest, if not the highest, energy infused BCAA product on the market. If you are looking for a product to replace your coffee or soda habits then this is a great alternative with an amazing flavor profile.

Why You Should Trust Our Reviews

  • EXPERT REVIEW PANEL
Our review panel is made up of individuals with many years of experience in the sports nutrition industry, dating back to the early 2000’s. Their tenure gives them knowledge on brands, supplements, ingredients, dosages and more.
  • FULL CONTAINER REVIEWS
Unlike the majority of “review” sites on the internet, Fitness Informant reviews every supplement on a full-container basis. What does this mean? It means that a review is not written or recorded until the last serving of that product has been finished. We’ve all had products that were great for the first couple of days, but then lost their effectiveness shortly after. We want to ensure you are getting a full review based on a full product.
  • INGREDIENT EDUCATION
We breakdown each ingredient in our reviews to educate you on exactly what the ingredients do, and what is the proper dosage of each ingredient to effectively do what they are intended to do.
  • 100% HONEST – NO B.S. REVIEWS
Our number #1 priority is to inform you proper supplement selection through honest reviews. The majority of “review” sites on the internet will push you to buy a certain product based on the commissions they received. Not us. We want you to purchase the highest quality supplements at the best value. We put your health and wellness first. To achieve your goals we want you to use only the best supplements that you can afford. We do this by being honest.

Testing Results and Ratings

We reviewed MHP BCAA-XL Energy on five categories. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at the amount of aminos used, as well as the kind of aminos, the ratio and other ingredients involved in the making of this BCAA powder.

We then look at effectiveness. A high BCAA product will be effective. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Tangerine.

Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Another part of value are the competitors and other versions of BCAA products on the market; both with and without caffeine.

Ingredients Profile

(6.5/10)

BCAA-XL Energy from MHP utilizes 5g of a 10:1:1 BCAA ratio. This means that MHP is using 10 parts Leucine to one part Iso-Leucine and one part Valine. Recent studies suggest an increasing importance on the amino acid Leucine. This is why you are seeing more and more BCAA products that are venturing from the norm of 2:1:1. Another reason you are seeing companies utilize a higher concentration of Leucine in these products is because it is the cheapest of the BCAAs. However, research and studies conducted still indicate and validate that the 2:1:1 BCAA ratio is optimal post-workout. This product would have scored really high here had they utilized the 2:1:1 ratio.

The area on the profile where I feel this product excels is in the energy complex. You are getting your energy from green coffee bean extract and green tea extract. Overall you’re getting 265mg of “energy.” If you compared that to the popular Amino Energy and EVL BCAA Energy you are essentially doubling that. I can’t find many other amino based energy products with a higher amount per serving than BCAA-XL Energy.

Effectiveness

(8/10)

Being completely honest I was looking forward to taking this product more for the energy component than any BCAA component. After all, I know that the 2:1:1 is the best ratio for BCAA post-workout. This was a product I knew I was going to drink during the day on the job to keep me alert and focused. I will say that overall the effectiveness of the energy was great. It was just the pick-me-up I was looking for mid-day. I am not much of a coffee drink and I never touch soda. This was my go-to during times of sluggishness.

Regarding the recovery aspect of the product I cannot commit to saying it helped increase my overall recovery time but I firmly believe that it played a part in it. The higher concentration of Leucine does speed up protein synthesis and since this was consumed after my anabolic window I feel I derived the most benefit out of it.

Taste

Tangerine: (10/10)

I love any orange/mango/tangerine drink so I absolutely was excited to test out MHP’s tangerine flavor in their BCAA-XL Energy. It is one of the best, if not the best tasting “orange-citrus” based flavored product that I have ever had. Prior to this my favorite was EVL’s orange BCAA product but this was very good. If you’re a fan of tangerine/orange/mango you will love this.

Mixability

(10/10)

BCAA-XL Energy mixed very well. If you compare it to the other products in this category I would have to say this mixed the best out of them all. It’s a water soluble product that doesn’t leave any residue behind (when using a shaker cup).

Value

(6.5/10)

Value is a very interesting point of conversation when it comes to BCAA-XL Energy. If you look at others in the category they retail for around $20 for 30-servings. Since this does utilize more of the “cheaper” amino in Leucine I don’t feel there is a justification for a higher price than that on 30-servings.

A product like EVL BCAA Energy uses a 2:1:1 ratio and gives 30-servings for $20. However, EVL BCAA Energy has about 50% less of an energy complex versus BCAA-XL Energy.

If you compare it to ON Amino Energy then you are comparing an amino product to BCAA. I feel that there is value in the higher amount of an energy complex but don’t think it justifies a 25% price increase.

I think if this was priced at $18-$20 it would have a nice argument to being more valuable. If this product was a 2:1:1 ratio then I don’t think I would have such an issue.  At the end of the day if you are trying to find a healthier alternative to coffee and soda then this would be of great value to you.
