The Issues with The Protein Bar Market

One of the biggest issues facing the protein bar market is what we already described above. So many consumer package goods companies are creating them, loading it with poor quality protein, putting 20g of protein on the label and people just assume it is good. That is not the case.

Not every protein bar is good for you. Not all should be treated equal. Walk into a gas station and look at them lining the shelves. They are camouflaged in with the candy bars. We examined four different areas of each protein bar when we compiled our rankings:

Ingredients

We rate each protein bar on five different categories. We start by looking at the ingredient profile. We investigate the types of protein and the other ingredients used to make the finished product The higher quality protein sources and less fillers, the better score the bar would get. We also look at the macro nutrients of each product. A lot of individuals want to know calories, total fat, total carbohydrates and total protein.

Taste

Next we look at the taste of the protein bar. We look at taste in two ways. The first is does it taste like the label says? For example, does a cinnamon twist protein bar actually taste like a cinnamon twist? Second, we judge the overall taste of the product. We combine these for one score.

Texture

Texture is very important to the protein bar category. Texture encompasses the hardness of the bar, the chewiness, the crunch and the chalkiness. A good textured bar will have a nice combination of all the good things about texture.

Value

Finally, we talk about the products value. Value is the combination of ingredient profile, taste and texture as it relates to price and to the competition. Just because a product is “cheap” in terms of price tag, does not mean it is a value. You need a combination of ingredient profile, taste, texture and price to be a good value.

Outright Bars were created by Marc Lobliner to be a fuel source for all people, not just fitness fanatics, that was a much cleaner alternative to what is on the market today.

Outright Bars are not marketed to the traditional bodybuilding community. Marc decided NOT to brand it MTS because he wanted to appeal to the all-family demographic. With simple ingredients and a taste and texture to go with it, he did just that.

Outright Bars are made from peanut butter, honey, protein powder, oats, chips and sometimes cocoa powder. It doesn't get more simple than that. They pack in 15g of protein, which compared to the competitive set is less, but again you have a much cleaner profile with a high quality protein source. The Outright brand has made protein bars, both peanut butter and almond butter base, nut butter spreads and protein wafers.

B.A.R. is different from the MRE Bar because it uses whey protein versus the beef/chicken/etc protein from MRE. This means that the protein source in B.A.R. is more bioavailable than MRE. B.A.R. is also different in that it is inspired by your favorite childhood and adulthood cereals.

SINFIT Bars had a long run atop our rankings list as #1 until recently getting beat out by MRE. SINFIT Bars are solid, filling and delicious bars that deserve to be in anyone's top 5.

First, they use two quality protein sources to make the bar. The first ingredient listed is whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Other bars typically are using a milk protein, nothing wrong with that, but not as high as quality as whey.

Next, they are HUGE. These bars are 83g each. They contain 30g of protein. This is going to be more than most. With that, however, comes an increase in the other macronutrients. You get 16g of fat and 28g of carbs. This might turn some people off, but these are so big you could use it as a meal replacement or just eat half and save the rest for later.

The taste is amazing too. They are close to being one of the best tasting bars on the market today, their score is reflective of that!

Who Makes It

Sinister Labs was our Breakout Brand of the Year in 2017 for their commitment to creating quality food products. The name Scott James may not mean anything to you, but he’s been known to build quality companies in the sports nutrition space. He has done it again with Sinister Labs. He also brought Mr. 212, Flex Lewis, on board to be part of this wonderful company.

Sinister Labs also makes protein pancakes and nut butter spreads that are amazing. If they continue to release products that are like these, I don’t think anyone will be able to stop them!

83g Bar – these bars are HUGE, so big that they can be a meal replacement bar or you can getaway with only eating half and saving the other half for later

Bottom Line:

OhYeah! ONE Bar tops our list because they were able to make a great tasting protein bar with an awesome texture all while maintaining quality ingredients and being macro friendly. ONE Bars contain only 5g of NET carbs and 7g of fats.

They are able to keep carbs low and fats even lower. ONE Bars also contain 21g of protein from whey protein isolate and milk protein isolates, a high quality protein blend. They are also gluten free which is big in the fitness community. One area of highlight is the sodium count is also really low on these compared to others.

This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the pre-workout, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.

We then look at effectiveness. An effective pre-workout will use high quality, proven ingredients, at clinically backed dosages. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Blackberry Lemonade.

Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Ingredients Profile

Iron Brothers Supplements Pre-Workout V2 uses Dynamine, a new ingredient said to be the replacement for DMHA. I wouldn’t go that far, in my personal experiences with it, but it does work well. Let’s hop into the formula.

We start with 4g of L-Citrulline. Before you think this is under dosed, remember that pure L-Citrulline should be dosed between 3-5g. We are right in the middle here. This ingredient provides a pump by increasing blood flow into your muscle area. Agmatine Sulfate is used at 1g. This is another pump ingredient. It works by increasing NO levels in your body. NO then pushes more blood into the muscle. The typical dosage of this is 1g. L-Norvaline is yet another pump agent dosed at 150mg. This works by increasing NO levels and producing blood flow. Optimal dosage is a minimum of 100mg. We are set here. Lastly, for pump, we get 50mg of Theobromine. This is the ingredient commonly found in dark chocolate. It helps improve blood flow as well. I see this typically dosed at a minimum of 100mg, so we may be a tad under dosed here, but with all the pump ingredients in this product we are fine.

When we talk strength and endurance we are going to look at three ingredients used in this product: Beta-Alanine, Betaine Anhydrous and Taurine. Beta-Alanine, an endurance extender, is dosed at 3.2g, which is the clinically studied dosage. Betaine is dosed at 2.7g. This is actually dosed higher than the optimal 1.5g-2.5g dosage. This helps with strength and power output. Taurine is dosed at 1g. This helps with strength output. This is dosed at the minimum accepted level. Overall, strength profile is standard and solid.

Last, we have the energy and focus ingredients. We start with 275mg of Caffeine Anhydrous. You all know what caffeine is. This is a standard dosage of caffeine now days. We also get 100mg of Dynamine. This is caffeine-like, without the crash and burn. I have seen Dynamine dosed everywhere from 100mg to 200mg. There has not been enough studies on it yet, but 100mg of Dynamine combined with 275mg of caffeine is fine. Hordenine is dosed at 75mg. This is a fat burner. There isn’t a ton of evidence for optimal dosage, but we’ve seen this as low as 50mg and as high as 100mg. At 75mg we are fine. The one focus ingredient is Huperzine A at 200mcg. This is a really good dosage of this cognitive enhancing ingredient. My only qualm here is that we don’t get more focus ingredients. That’s the most important part of a pre in my opinion.

Overall, everything is dosed right where it needs to be. Effectiveness

Pump is great as it has a multitude of pump ingredients dosed correctly. I would still use a pump agent with it, because the pump provides so many health benefits, not just pretty to look at. I am a big fan of Norvaline and Theobromine. I wish Theobromine was dosed higher, but this still does what it is intended to do.

For energy, it is good. I am not a huge buyer into Dynamine. I toyed around with it for my own pre-workout but never felt it provided the bang for the buck. The energy with this pre-workout is good, but I think it could still be better. At 275mg Caffeine, this is going to tweak a lot of people out, if you’re a stim junkie you’ll want more. The addition of Hordenine is solid too.

The focus aspect had me disappointed. Yes, caffeine, Hordenine and Dynamine all contribute to it, but Huperzine A is the only real cognitive enhancing ingredient used. Where is Tyrosine or A-GPC? Even a cheaper ingredient like Choline would have been fine. I didn’t find the zoned in focus with this pre-workout that I have with others.

Endurance and strength are what you’d expect with this pre. We get a solid dosage of Beta-Alanine, Betaine Anhydrous and Taurine. You can get through a tough workout rather easily.

Overall, a really good pre-workout that works. Everyone does a blue raspberry or fruit punch. Blackberry lemonade you don’t find a lot of. It is decent. If you’re a fan of that flavor combo then you will really like this. It’s not necessarily my forte, per se, but it is still a decent tasting pre-workout. Ingredients Profile

We start with the Multi-stage mTOR & Recovery Elements section. We get 2.5g of L-Leucine. This is the BCAA responsible for turning they key and starting the engine for mTOR. Glutamine is used at 1.5g. This helps with muscle repair, but also with gut health.

We then get into the EAA & Uptake Elements. We get 1.69g of EAAs (along with 2.5mg of Bioperine for uptake). This helps feed our bodies while we sleep and promotes muscle repair and growth. EAAs are a hot subject these days, and when taken on an empty stomach they can provide major benefits.

We then dive into the Anabolic Growth & REM Elements. We get 500mg of GABA. This helps promote HGH secretion while you sleep. GABA should be dosed between 3-5g – so it would require a lot more to be beneficial. L-Arginine HCl is dosed at 500mg. This is used for NO production, but studies have shown it to help with sleep. L-Ornithine HCl is also used at 500mg. A study here shows that it can increase sleep quality (especially when you drink.)

Mind & Mood Support Elements is next. This includes L-Glycine at 500mg. This can improve sleep by reducing stress and allowing you to focus before bed. Mucana Pruriens is used at 125mg. This is a good source of L-Dopa, which is the “feel good” feeling we get when something makes us happy. Lastly, we get Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCl at 100mg. This transmits fatty acids to be burned off as energy. Odd to see it here, plus the dosage is so low it won’t do a ton.

Adrenal Support Elements is next. This consists of Ashwagandha Root at 150mg. Ashwagandha can relieve stress and help boost testosterone. A minimum of 600mg should be used (using two scoops will get you 300mg). Avena Sativa Extract is used at 100mg. This helps improve cognitive function and libidio. Last we get Licorice Root Extract at 50mg. This has been shown to reduce stress.

Lastly, we get the PowerDown Elements. We get 500mg L-Tryptophan. This increases Melatonin (the next ingredient) and improves sleep quality. Melatonin is used at 1.5mg. With two scoops you get 3mg. A solid dosage to help improve sleep quality.

Overall, a good recovery profile. At the end of the day, I wanted to use this product to help with sleep quality. The better sleep you get, the more your body can effectively recovery. The amino acids used in this product are nice as well, but some of the ingredients, although are pretty on the label, are not dosed sufficiently to provide benefits.

So, does it help you sleep? In short, yes. The one issue you may find yourself running into, depending on the amount of water you use, you might have to get up to pee the liquid you just drank. Ingredients Profile

We get 5g of 2:1:1 BCAA (InstAminos from Compound Solutions). These are quality aminos (may not be fermented/vegan FYI). This is the ratio we want and the dosage that is acceptable. I have no qualms with this at all.

We also get other EAAs which people are losing their minds over. Collectively this should provide a full spectrum of aminos to provide adequate muscle recovery, repair and growth.

Outside the aminos, we get 5g of Carb10 carbohydrates. These are fast absorbing carbs that can help restore glycogen levels to help provide energy.

This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the pre-workout, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.

Mixability refers to how well the powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Ingredients Profile

Now, with some ingredients, there are not any clinical studies BUT we can compare to the market and give you our best two cents. Let’s dive into TC Nutrition Batch 27 by category, meaning what each ingredient contributes too.

Pump

Batch 27 starts with 8g of Citrulline DL Malate (2:1). This ingredient is going to improve blood flow into your muscles providing you with a solid pump. The dosage for this type of Citrulline should be between 6-8g. We are at the top level, happy with this dosage. Agmatine Sulfate is used at 600mg, but should also be dosed at a minimum of 1g. This ingredient helps with your pump. It increases NO in your body. I would like to see a minimum of 1g of Agmatine Sulfate used. We also get 250mg of Theobromine . Studies show between 200mg and 400mg for dosage. This dilates your blood vessels which increases your pump.

Strength and Endurance

Beta-Alanine, the “itchy” ingredient designed to help strength output and endurance is dosed at 3.5g. This is above the 3.2g clinically studied and suggested dosage; we’re good here. (NOTE: Just so we’re clear, more Beta-Alanine doesn’t make it a better pre-workout. Some people judge a pre-workout supplement by the tingly feeling they get, but that should not be the case.) Betaine is dosed at 1.6g. This should be dosed between 1.5 and 2.5g. I like the higher end at 2.5g but 1.6g falls within range. This ingredient is to help increase strength output. Creatine HCl is dosed at 1g. The effective dosage of Creatine HCl is 1-2g. I, personally, do not like creatine in my pre-workouts. I am a bigger fan of Creatine Monohydrate (which requires 5g). Creatine is a fairly inexpensive ingredient, by putting it in a pre-workout it is taking up space and most of the time you pay a premium for it. In this case, because it is dosed correctly we will say kudos.

Focus

L-Tyrosine, a focus/memory enhancing ingredient is dosed at 600mg. This should be dosed at a minimum of 1g. I like the use of this ingredient, but anything under 1g to me is a waste. Nice to have, but could use more. We get 100mg of Theanine, the mood relaxing ingredient. This is best taken with caffeine, which we get in this pre-workout. Dosages of 100-200mg are sufficient. Lastly, for focus, we get 120mcg of Huperzine A. This is a cognitive enhancing ingredient. Dosages can range from 50-200mcg.

Energy

There are two sources of caffeine in Batch 27. Caffeine Anhydrous is dosed at 275mg. This is the fast acting, hard hitting caffeine that can lead to a crash. To avoid the crash, Batch 27 uses 50mg of Caffeine Citrate. They also toss in 110mg of Synephrine aka Bitter Orange Extract. This is 30% so we are actually getting about 33mg of Synepherine. Recommended dosages is 30-60mg, so we’re in the ball park. L-Carnitine, an ingredient which transports fatty acids to be burned as energy, is used at 500mg. This is under dosed as well. At minimum in a pre-workout we’d see this at 1g. True L-Carnitine products are 1,500-3,000mg.

Overall, some ingredients are dosed nicely, while others are underwhelming. L-Carnitine, Tyrosine, Carnitine and Agmatine Sulfate are all under dosed. But on the flip side we get big doses of Citrulline DL Malate and Beta-Alanine. Effectiveness

Seeing that Batch 27 had 3.5g mixed with 325mg of Caffeine and then the addition of Synepherine, we were worried that this could be one of those pres that trick you into thinking it is good. We didn’t get that scratch your face off feeling which was nice. We break it down by category:

Pump

Pump was good. We typically would use a pump product on top of our pre, and if you are big into that I would recommend you keep doing that. The pump is good, just not epic like it can be with a pump powder.

Strength & Endurance

Solid here. Fatigue set in when it should set it. What I mean by that is we were able to power through some intense workouts. Endurance was nice. One thing a good pre-workout should do is help with muscle fatigue. No major issues here.

Energy

The best part of this pre-workout. I like the use of two caffeine sources. Having ingredients like Theanine coupled with it helps too so you’re not just raging. Synepherine (Bitter Orange) also contributes nicely to the energy, This is where we get a bit of the intense-ness. This is a nice, intense, but euphoric energy.

Focus

We lack a bit here. If you look at the deck, there isn’t any one ingredient/focus ingredient that pops off outside of Huperzine A. Stims help with focus, but in terms of others we’ve had, this one isn’t a top pre-workout for focus.

Overall, this pre-workout is effective. It is a safer pre-workout meaning it isn’t tossing in a bunch of gray area stims, and with that you won’t get a crazy intense pre, but one that works and you reap the benefits of it. It is very tart/sour, just FYI. This should be expected due to the name. If you are into the bodybuilding world you’ll like this since Sour Patch Kids are one of our favorite candies. The issue with the 40-servings is you are going to be drastically under dosed. We reviewed everything above on 20-servings. That puts this pre-workout over $2 per serving. Based on what else is out on the market and their price point, this comes in higher and isn’t a better rated pre-workout. Is it worth $40+? Yes, but there are others that have been rated higher that retail for the same or less.
