It is extreme rare in today’s age to see a pre-workout that does something drastically different than the rest of the pack. Morphogen Nutrition just accomplished that with the reveal of their updated Alphagen pre-workout.
Alphagen is the staple, stim-based pre-workout from Morphogen Nutrition. While the OG formula was a success, Morphogen Nutrition CEO Ben Hartman did an overhaul of the product.
The biggest thing that jumps off the screen is L-Tyrosine went from 3g to a whopping 10g per serving! Tyrosine has been gaining popularity as it has major benefits for cognition.
Users will still get 8g of Citrulline Malate 2:1.
Velvet Bean Extract aka Mucuna Pruriens (standardized to 98% L-Dopa) is used at 750mg. This will have a major, positive impact to mood and focus. This is the same as the OG formula.
Alpha-GPC also stays at 600mg per serving, but they went with a standard Alpha-GPC vs. AlphaSize Alpha-GPC. Another popular and effective focus ingredient.
Advantra Z Bitter Orange is used at 500mg. The OG formula used Synephrine at 50mg. This yields the same amount, just in a better quality. This will increase body temperature, metabolism and output.
Caffeine went from 200mg to 400mg. However, there is a reason for that. Morphogen Nutrition dropped Dynamine (250mg yeilding 100mg) and TeaCrine (250mg yeilding 100mg) as a replacement. With the additional Tyrosine this may offset the impact. This will also make this product significantly easier to flavor. An area where Morphogen Nutrition struggled in the past.
The brand also kept 200mg Eria Jarensis. This works well with caffeine to increase energy output and focus.
Theobromine is dosed at 200mg, the same as the OG formula.
Theanine went from 200mg to 100mg. Users may enjoy this because much feedback on Theanine is that it is too strong and overtakes the caffeine impact.
Finally they use 300mcg of Huperzine A. This is an increase from 200mg in the OG formula.
Morphogen Nutrition elected to not use absorption agents in AstraGin and BioPerine. DMAE was also excluded from the new formula.
Overall this formula should hit well on energy and focus. Then if users wish to add pump, they can buy Volugen from the brand.

Final Takeaway
I like the updates. I loved the OG formula, but the flavoring system needed work. Dropping TeaCrine and Dynamine will allow that, plus it allowed the team at Morphogen to up the dosage of Tyrosine and use a better source of Synephrine to hit a price point. We will be getting a care package on this which we will report real feedback.
