Overview of Sparta Nutrition Spartan Whey

Sparta Nutrition quickly became one of our favorite companies for their stellar pre-workout . Not to mention they make a bunch of other innovative products that we are fans of here at FI. When they announced protein powder our ears perked up and our eyes got wide. Why? We expected big things.

Our expectations were exceeded with . Why? They give us a tri-blend FULLY disclosed label (down to the flavoring) of the product. To boot, it rivals the competition on price but includes isolate, concentrate and casein proteins to give you a solid feeding system. Overall, Spartan Whey ends up being one of our favorite proteins of all-time!

Why You Should Trust Our Reviews

Our review panel is made up of individuals with many years of experience in the sports nutrition industry, dating back to the early 2000’s. Their tenure gives them knowledge on brands, supplements, ingredients, dosages and more.
Unlike the majority of “review” sites on the internet, Fitness Informant reviews every supplement on a full-container basis. What does this mean? It means that a review is not written or recorded until the last serving of that product has been finished. We’ve all had products that were great for the first couple of days, but then lost their effectiveness shortly after. We want to ensure you are getting a full review based on a full product.
We breakdown each ingredient in our reviews to educate you on exactly what the ingredients do, and what is the proper dosage of each ingredient to effectively do what they are intended to do.
Our number #1 priority is to inform you proper supplement selection through honest reviews. The majority of “review” sites on the internet will push you to buy a certain product based on the commissions they received. Not us. We want you to purchase the highest quality supplements at the best value. We put your health and wellness first. To achieve your goals we want you to use only the best supplements that you can afford. We do this by being honest.

Testing Results and Ratings

We reviewed Sparta Nutrition Spartan Whey protein powder on five categories. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at quality of protein used, amount and other ingredients involved in the making of this protein powder.

We then look at effectiveness. A high quality protein will be effective. This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out Chocolate Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream and Loopy Fruits.

Mixability refers to how well the protein powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Another part of value are the competitors and other versions of proteins available on the market.

Ingredients Profile

Not too often do we give a perfect score to any product. We do it when a product deserves it. Spartan Whey deserves it.

Why do we like Spartan Whey so much? First, you get three forms of protein which helps with the absorption process and prevents protein waste. Second, you get a FULLY disclosed label. They took a page out of NutraBio’s book and even disclose the flavoring profile. Finally, they use AstraGin to boost absorption. Let’s dive into it!

Each serving size is 33.5g with 25.5g being protein. That means each serving is 76% protein. I would like to see this higher wherever possible, but this is higher than a lot and a good range.

Out of the 25.5g of protein you are getting three sources:
Whey Protein Isolate (WPI90): 10.5g complete protein
Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC80): 10g
Casein Protein: 5g

Let’s break down all three sources!

First, whey protein isolate is one of the highest quality protein sources you can get. It is the highest quality and the fastest absorbing/digesting protein. This could be called “stage 1” of the absorption process.

Next, whey protein concentrate is your standard protein, but can vary in quality from 34% to 80%. Sparta Nutrition is giving you the highest quality in WPC80 (80%). This absorbs/digests slower than isolate, but faster than casein. This could be called “stage 2.”

Last, casein protein is the slowest digesting protein, and helps feed you throughout an extending period of time. This could be called “stage 3.”

AstraGin is a solid addition to help with absorption. Can’t go wrong here.

We also love the use of the essential fat Lecithin.

Overall, this is an awesome profile, with great protein, minimal carbs, fats and sodium. Love it.

A “3 stage” protein is effective if that’s what you’re looking for. For me, I like the quick uptake of isolate, followed by concentrate and then the continual feed of the casein. If you’re in a bodybuilding competition, you may be looking for a zero carb isolate, that’s fine.

Regarding blended proteins, I am a firm believer that I would ALWAY want casein included due to how awesome it actually is when feeding your body.

In terms of effectiveness, Spartan Whey does the job with the dosages we are receiving.

Chocolate Ice Cream: (8/10)
Vanilla Ice Cream: (7/10)
Loopy Fruits: (9/10)
Jacked Apples: (6/10)
CinnaCrunch: (8/10)

Taste is a big deal in the protein game. Why? For one, you typically don’t chug it like you do with a pre-workout. Two, you typically buy 5 lbs of it…it better taste great!

Spartan Whey did good on taste. I was not as big of a fan on vanilla as I was the other two flavors. The vanilla also wasn’t as good as competitors vanilla. The chocolate was pretty standard, honestly. I feel like most chocolates are the same, and this didn’t differ. The best of the three was Loopy Fruits. It literally tasted just like the milk in the bowl after easting Fruit Loops. They did well with this.

I won’t say it was the best tasting protein I have ever had, but close. We’d love to try their Blueberry Cobbler and Double Stuffed Cookies and Cream.

When you combine three sources of protein, it will typically affect the mixability. No, this was not clumpy at all. You could feel the grittiness of some of the protein sources. It is a “thicker” shake due to the use of casein as well.

I don’t mind it, and you shouldn’t either, but just know the mixability is going to differ from a straight isolate protein powder.

I think the general public looks at protein as a $10/lb business. That means they expect a 5 lb tub to cost around $50. This can be true, depending on the brand and quality. However, when you are buying higher quality protein, you need to put up a little more money.

Spartan Whey is a higher quality protein, that is fully disclosed, using three protein sources, available in a 5 lb tub for the price of $57. To me, this is a steal. Why? Gold Standard Whey, which is a blend of isolate and concentrate (not knowing the quality of concentrate) retails for $58 for 5 lbs. We know what we are getting with Sparta Nutrition Spartan Whey. This is where you should spend your money!
