Overview of Sparta Nutrition Hydra Shred

Sparta Nutrition is blowing up in this space. Why? They keep producing high quality supplements that work. They won our 2017 Shield of Excellence Supplement Award for best pre-workout featuring DMAA or DMHA with Kraken. They have since re-formulated Kraken to remove DMHA…and they’ve done the same with Hydra Shred

has an variety of fat burning ingredients designed to work effectively at helping you achieve your fat loss goals. No, you cannot just take this product and sit. You need to do work. With that said, if you do the work, and take this product, you will be well on your way to your fat loss goals. Hydra Shred utilizes many proven fat burning ingredients and gives you the option of prolonging your unit life, or speeding up the fat loss with serving size. Overall, Hydra Shred is a solid fat loss product with great value that is best used fasted.

Why You Should Trust Our Reviews

Our review panel is made up of individuals with many years of experience in the sports nutrition industry, dating back to the early 2000’s. Their tenure gives them knowledge on brands, supplements, ingredients, dosages and more.
Unlike the majority of “review” sites on the internet, Fitness Informant reviews every supplement on a full-container basis. What does this mean? It means that a review is not written or recorded until the last serving of that product has been finished. We’ve all had products that were great for the first couple of days, but then lost their effectiveness shortly after. We want to ensure you are getting a full review based on a full product.
We breakdown each ingredient in our reviews to educate you on exactly what the ingredients do, and what is the proper dosage of each ingredient to effectively do what they are intended to do.
Our number #1 priority is to inform you proper supplement selection through honest reviews. The majority of “review” sites on the internet will push you to buy a certain product based on the commissions they received. Not us. We want you to purchase the highest quality supplements at the best value. We put your health and wellness first. To achieve your goals we want you to use only the best supplements that you can afford. We do this by being honest.

Testing Results and Ratings

We reviewed Sparta Nutrition Hydra Shred on five categories. We first start by looking at it’s ingredient profile. This portion of the review looks at the different ingredients used in the fat burner, what their intention is and how effectively dosed are each ingredient.

We then look at effectiveness. An effective fat burner will use high quality, proven ingredients, at clinically backed dosages.  This is generally an extension of the profile section. The higher quality ingredients used at proper dosages, the more effective that product will be.

Then we move into the taste of the different flavors we’ve tried. We grade each flavor separately and average the scores for their overall taste rating. We were able to test out the following flavors: Mango Nectar.

Mixability refers to how well the protein powder mixes in 12oz of water. We use the shaker bottle test. This would be your typical Blender Bottle with the spiral chrome ball.

Finally, we talk about value. Value is the combination of profile, effectiveness, taste and mixability in relation to cost. Another part of value are the competitors and other versions of fat burners on the market.

Ingredients Profile

I always love reviewing fat burners, because many companies try to pull quick ones on you by hiding their ingredients in a prop blend. Not Sparta Nutrition. Hydra Shred, the reformulated version without DMHA, doesn’t try to pull any quick ones on you. Hydra Shred is a fully transparent label that gives the user an option between one scoop (60-servings) or two scoops (30-servings). You can decide. For the purpose of this review, we used the 2-scoop, 30-serving system.

Hydra Shred starts out with 2,000mg of L-Carnitine L-Tartrate. Typically we see this dosed around 1,000mg. There are straight Carnitine supplements that are up to 3,000mg. We also get 500mg of Acetyl-L Carnitine. Collectively we are getting 2,500mg of a Carnitine ingredient (difference being how it is utilized in the body). This is a great dosage of Carnitine which aids in fat loss. It helps transport long-chain fatty acids in the body to be burned as energy.

Garcinia Cambogia is used at 250mg. Garcinia Cambogia is used to aid in fat loss by essentially “blocking” your body’s ability to make fat. It also helps control cholesterol levels as well. It is a highly hyped ingredient that many studies have been conducted on. Most of the studies are inconclusive. This can be dosed up to 1,000mg per day. This isn’t the clinical dosage per se, but we’ve seen it.

There are several ingredients that contribute to overall energy production and central nervous system stimulation (improves metabolism which burns fat). We get 100mg of Caffeine (from Green Tea), 150mg of TeaCrine (like Caffeine but we can’t develop a tolerance to it, per studies), 50mg of Caffeine Anhydrous, 50mg of Caffeine Di-Malate, 50mg of Guarana Extract and 50mg of Green Coffee Bean Extract. This is 450mg of ingredients that are producing a heck of a lot of energy (6 forms of Caffeine). I wouldn’t recommend taking this with a pre-workout because of this. This amount will speed up your bodies energy production system which means metabolizing more calories for fuel.

Vanillin has been shown to decrease cholesterol levels and fatty acids in the body (the bad ones). Hydra Shred doses Vanillin at 100mg which is sufficient. Banaba Leaf Extract is used at 60mg. Now this doesn’t directly impact fat loss, but it does help with blood sugar levels and inhibiting the uptake of carbs (thus not causing a spike in blood sugar which is then stored in your fat stores). There are no studies on optimal doses.

Grains of Paradise is used at 50mg. This is used for fat burning purposes. This is a higher dose than we are used to seeing…that isn’t a bad thing. Theobromine is used at 50mg as well. Theobromine is a vasodilator which means it widens your blood vessels. Another thing it does is increases urine production (hence the name Hydra Shred). This also helps with insulin sensitivity. We are comfortable with 50mg.

Yerba Mate Extract is dosed at 50mg. This ingredient contains stimulants that help treat obesity. Cirsium Oligophyllum is dosed at 50mg. This is a fat burning ingredient that we found in one of the best fat burners of all time: OxyElite Pro from USP Labs. I can’t argue with that. Lastly, Cocoabuterol is dosed at 20mg. This is a thermogenic ingredient designed to increase your body temp so you sweat and melt fat. This is a fairly new ingredient but very effective.

Overall, the profile has a wide variety of products that contribute to energy production (also increases body temp), fat loss and fat prevention. A great profile for a fat burner.

Sparta Nutrition Hydra Shred Label

We had one of our trusted tester run this product. He is a 6’3″ 220lb male.

Overall, he said this was very effective, especially when taken fasted (our recommendation). He stated that two things were very noticeable from Hydra Shred: energy and body temp.

The 6 forms of caffeine gave him the energy to get through the day, cardio or even a workout (there’s enough caffeine sources in this to double as a pre-workout, you’re just missing the pump and focus aspect). At the same time, as his energy production was up, his body temperature was also up. This is to be expected. When you increase energy, you burn calories for fuel, thus increasing your body temperature.

Regarding sweat, he sweat a lot, but he wasn’t entirely sure how much Hydra Shred contributing to the overall sweat he got on from the gym. He definitely stated it was more, but couldn’t quantify how much more.

At the end of the day, this product is effective and does what it is intended to do.

Mango Nectar: (6.5/10)

Our tester commented that the taste of Mango Nector was definitely tropical and tasted of mango, but just wasn’t the best tasting version. He stated that taste shouldn’t matter much since you drink this quickly, but to the viewers of FI it does.

He’s had a lot better tasting supplements (pre-workouts, BCAAs, etc) but has also had a lot worse. He recommends testing out a different flavor, unless tropical is your thing.

Mixability can be different if you take one scoop versus two. For our purposes, we took two. You can see part of the powder float in the water after a vigorous shake in a Blender Bottle. This is not the end of the world, but it could be more soluble in water.

The product didn’t chalk up at all, but again, you could see particles floating in the water and not fully dissolved.

Value can change as well based on how many scoops you take. If you take one scoop, you’re getting 60-servings for $40. If you take two, then you’re getting 30-servings for $40.

Overall, regardless of how many scoops you take, Hydra Shred uses proven ingredients that are designed to aid in fat loss and weight loss. Two scoops will get you there faster, and even at a $1.33 a serving, that’s a small price to pay to shred some unwanted body fat, weight and water. This is a nice value for an effective product.
