There are too many sports nutrition brands that exist today that were started by someone in a suit and not someone clanging and banging in the gym. Precision Nutrition was started by a IFBB Pro bodybuilder John Strauss. John started Precision Nutrition because he was tired of paying for gimmicks and not results. Precision Nutrition is the difference between “good enough” and greatness.
Precision Nutrition Triggered Pre-Workout is the brand's extreme pre-workout. Backed by a fully loaded formula, Triggered pre-workout from Precision Nutrition is almost but guaranteed to enhance your workouts with a formula that was designed for boosting energy, elevating focus and improving blood flow and performance.
Precision Nutrition Triggered Pre-Workout Supplement Facts
There are a lot of consumers who crave a premium pre-workout that has efficacious doses of key ingredients. There is still a desire for hard hitting pre-workouts that make you feel like you’re on a different planet. Triggered pre-workout from Precision Nutrition combines multiple stimulants to make this an extreme hard-hitting pre-workout with additional cognition and blood flow ingredients. A word of caution on this pre-workout, due to the extreme formula, we would not recommend this be a daily pre-workout, but a pre-workout to take two to three times a week if you workout five days a week.
L-Citrulline – 6,000mg
Citrulline is the precursor to Arginine. The reason why companies use Citrulline instead of Arginine is that Citrulline is better absorbed and then is converted into Arginine in the body. When it does this it triggers the nitric oxide pathway to produce more nitric oxide. The result of this is more blood flow into the muscles.
Improved blood flow leads to bigger, fuller pumps, but also aids in performance and recovery. Nutrient rich blood populating the muscles improves muscular endurance and output. It also aids in repair of muscle fibers that are worn from a workout.
The 6,000mg dosage is a great dosage of Citrulline as the dosage required for benefit is 3,000-5,000mg.
Beta-Alanine – 4,000mg
Beta-Alanine is a legendary sports nutrition ingredient used to improve muscular endurance. Beta-Alanine is the ingredient that causes users to get the “tingles” properly know as paresthesia. This is what most consumers think the benefit of this ingredient is, but it’s just a side effect of the ingredient while the primary benefit is the ability to go longer before exhaustion of the muscle. Beta-Alanine also buffers lactic acid so it can aid in the reduction of delayed on-set muscle soreness (DOMS).
The common dosage of Beta-Alanine is 3,200mg. This is at 4,000mg so above the required dosage.
Hydroprime Glycerol – 2,500mg
Powdered glycerol is a common selection in pre-workouts that want the muscles to retain more fluid in them. Hydroprime is a branded version of glycerol that tends to be more stable than generic glycerol. Glycerol essentially turns your muscles into a sponge and absorbs fluid to keep them hydrated. This improves muscular endurance and performance. It also makes them look more full and “pumped.”
Powdered glycerol tends to be on the lower side of dosing due to it needs added stabilizers to prevent it from clumping. The 2,500mg dosage may be enough to slightly improve endurance, but if you want the full benefit of glycerol you’d want to add a liquid glycercol product that is dosed around 10-20g.
L-Tyrosine – 1,500mg
Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that can improve mood and focus. It does this by replenishing dopamine, and other neurotransmitters, levels in the body. The more dopamine your body releases the better you feel and the more focused you can be. The standardized dose of Tyrosine is 1,000mg. At 1,500mg you get slightly more.
Choline Bitartrate – 1,000mg
Choline Bitartrate helps improve focus and mood. Choline bitartrate can help increase choline availability. By increasing acetylcholine, you are improving memory, learning, focus and mind-muscle connection. Choline Bitartrate ranks third for effective choline ingredients behind CDP-Choline and Alpha-GPC. This is why you generally need a higher dosage. The 1,000mg dosage is at the high level of the recommended range.
VasoDrive-AP – 508mg
VasoDrive-AP is derived from casein protein. VasoDrive-AP inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). This causes your blood vessels to relax allowing blood to move more smoothly and quicker into the muscles. This aids in creating bigger and longer lasting pumps. The 508mg dosage is the recommended dosage of VasoDrive-AP.
Himalayan Pink Salt – 500mg
Himalayan pink salt is added at 500mg to aid in hydration. Sodium is arguably the most important electrolyte for athletes and gym-goers. It’s responsible for fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function. It is a key electrolyte for hydration and muscular performance (contractions). Prior to salt being added by brands in pre-workouts, users would add table salt and pink salt on their own. The 500mg dosage is a nice add.
Alpha-GPC – 500mg
Alpha-GPC is the king of choline. It can cross the blood-brain barrier better than any other choline ingredient. Alpha-GPC increases acetyl choline in the body which will improve memory, learning and focus. Earlier we discussed that Triggered pre-workout has Choline Bitartrate at 1,000mg and this is dosed at 500mg. The dosage of 500mg yields 50% choline so users will get 250mg of active Alpha-GPC. This is slightly lower than the 300mg recommendation but with the add of 1,000mg Choline Bitartrate you are getting more than enough choline between the two to improve memory and focus.
Caffeine Anhydrous – 300mg
Caffeine Anhydrous is the fast-acting caffeine that goes to work within 10-15 minutes. It stimulates your central nervous system and reduces the feeling of fatigue. The 300mg dosage has become more of the “norm” in pre-workouts but it is still a high amount of caffeine. You would want to assess your tolerance and could start with one scoop instead of the two scoops. Caffeine has been proven to improve athletic performance time and time again.
Eria Jarensis – 150mg
Although Eria Jarensis is not illegal to be used in dietary supplements, it is not an FDA-approved dietary supplement. Eria Jarensis is banned in most professional sports leagues, by the NCAA and is on the WADA list.
Eria Jarensis can be called a “gray area” ingredient as it is a non-FDA approved ingredient. If the ingredient was illegal or banned it would not be allowed to be manufactured. With that said, if you participate in a drug-tested organization, do not take this product.
Eria Jarensis is an orchid plant that contains phenethylamine (PEA). This tends to have a smoother feeling stimulatory effect on users. It pairs well with caffeine and other stimulants and nootropic ingredients. It helps improve energy levels, focus and performance.
Eria Jarensis works extremely well, but it only works for a short period of time. The half-life of PEA is 5-10 minutes. This means after taking the stimulant peaks at 5-10 minutes. Most users take their pre-workout 30 minutes before they workout, which at that time you may not get the full benefit of PEA.
The 150mg dosage is what we’ve seen in other supplements.
DiCaffeine Malate – 100mg
It is uncertain if the 100mg is the yield, but DiCaffeine Malate yields 50% caffeine so this could be 50mg per serving making this 350mg in total. This is a good amount of total caffeine along with the other stimulants in this product. DiCaffeine Malate helps prolong energy levels and prevents or reduces the crash you could experience from 300mg Caffeine Anhydrous.
Theanine – 100mg
Theanine is dosed at 100mg to help smooth out the stimulant experience. Theanine is generally used with high stimulant products to reduce the negative side effects of stimulants (typically jitters). The 100mg of Theanine is a nice touch to provide a better experience for the consumer.
Synephrine – 50mg
Synephrine is a stimulant from bitter orange that can increase energy levels and increase thermogenesis. It pairs well with other stimulants like caffeine. This can elevate alertness while interacting with nootropics to give a boost in focus.
Synephrine can increase body temperature causes you to sweat more during your workout. The benefit with this is warmer muscles and better performance. Synephrine is typically used in fat burners as well for this feature.
The 50mg dosage is a high but acceptable dosage.
Noopept – 30mg
Although Noopept is not illegal to buy and use in the United States, it is not approved by the FDA as a dietary supplement.
Noopept is another “gray area” ingredient used in this product. It is not considered a dangerous substance, but it sits in a regulatory gray zone.
Noopept is a nootropic that works by enhancing cognitive, neuroprotective, and memory-supporting effects. Noopept can boost Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which is good for long-term cognitive function.
Noopept can help improve focus, especially when combined with stimulants.
The 30mg dosage is the dosage we’ve seen in other products.
Huperzine-A – 10mg
Huperzine-A is dosed at 10mg or 100mcg. Huperzine-A is great when combined with choline as it inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine, allowing ingredients like Alpha-GPC and Choline Bitartrate to work longer in the body. This contributes to improved focus.
Rauwolscine – 1mg
Rauwolscine aka Alpha Yohimbine is a hard-hitting stimulant. It is used in low levels due to the impact is has on the individual. It stimulants the central nervous system improving alertness, energy and focus. If you are sensitive to stimulants we recommend you start at one scoop to assess tolerance as the side effects (racing heart rate) can be extreme in some cases. The 1mg dosage is sufficient.
Final Takeaway on Precision Nutrition Triggered Pre-Workout
Proceed with caution. This is going to be a hard-hitting formula, but it will work effectively at improving energy levels and focus, while also getting more blood flowing in the body. Due to the use of Eria Jarensis and Noopept I do not recommend this for those who compete in tested organizations. Although these ingredients are not approved by the FDA as dietary supplements, there's no research to show that they are unsafe.
I personally like both ingredients in moderation. I would use this pre-workout 1-2x a week depending on my mood, energy, focus the day of the workout. If you want something that is going to kick you in the ass and ensure you are locked and loaded, this one would be sure to do that.
