Green Coffee Bean Extract (Chlorogenic Acid)

Green Coffee Bean Extract is a source of Chlorogenic Acid. It was promoted as a fat loss supplement by Dr Oz several years ago. 

Uses of Green Coffee Bean Extract

Green Coffee Bean Extract has been a popular supplement for years now. It was advertised on TV by Dr Oz years ago. 

Green Coffee Bean Extract has been shown to be beneficial for lowering blood pressure. A study was done on 28 individuals, and when compared to a placebo, Green Coffee Extract was shown to be significantly effective at lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure vs placebo. This was done with 140mg of Chlorogenic Acid per day. There was no effect on BMI in the participants, who were all of average body weight.

A study done on 15 men in the Netherlands showed that Green Coffee Extract was effective at suppressing insulin secretion in overweight men. There needs to be more research on this. Another study showed that Chlorogenic Acid may be effective at inhibiting glucose absorption. This study is what many companies used to promote Green Coffee Extract as a weight loss supplement, as there was a reduction in weight among the participants. It must be noted that the participants were obese, and that the weight loss may have been secondary to the decreased glucose absorption. 

With all of this said, there may be some benefits to supplementing with Green Coffee Extract for the purpose of blood glucose levels and blood pressure, however there doesn’t seem to be a benefit in terms of weight loss for healthy individuals. 

Interactions with Green Coffee Bean Extract

You can find Green Coffee Bean Extract as a standalone, you can also find it in fat burners and GDAs.

In fat burners, you’ll find it paired with ingredients such as Grains of Paradise, Synephrine, and Fucoxanthin.

In GDAs, you’ll find it paired with ingredients such as Berberine, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, and Gymnema Sylvestre

Side Effects with Green Coffee Bean Extract

Since Green Coffee Bean Extract contains Caffeine, it may have similar side effects to Caffeine. Some side effects may include insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, and irregular heartbeat. Always talk to your doctor before supplementing with Green Coffee Bean Extract.

Recommended Dose of Green Coffee Bean Extract

When supplementing with Green Coffee Bean Extract for the purpose of lowering blood pressure, look for the standardization of Chlorogenic Acid. You should be aiming for 140mg of Chlorogenic Acid per day. So if your Green Coffee Bean Extract is 300mg of the extract that is standardized to 50% Chlorogenic Acid, you’re getting 150mg of Chlorogenic Acid (which would be a good dose).
